Hey guys! IÂ’m opening this forum for anyone who has an art related question. Feel free to ask it here and I will answer as best and as quickly as I can.

If I do not answer you it is fair to assume that I have already answered the particular question you are asking. I will try to keep answered questions in the first few posts of this forum so you can locate them easily. Please check to make sure your question is not previously answered before you post.

I ask that you do not ask pricing related questions here.

I use Photoshop CC ($10/month subscription) and a small Wacom Intuos Art tablet hooked up to my HP laptop.

<div align="center">FAQs
<div align="center">
<div align="left">How do you paint your manes and tails? What would you suggest to me to improve my own?<div align="left">
When I decided I was very unhappy with my mane/tail ability, or lack there of, I took a month an forced myself to practice nothing but hair.
I would absolutely recommend searching DA and YouTube for mane/tail tutorials. Jello also has a good one:

https://horseeden.com/forums.php?f=17&t=20014
My technique is a bit similar to this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FM0zyUK688M

And there are many more out there that work just as well, if not better. Practice a lot, study lots of others painted hair, and find what works for you.

While it's by no means impossible to paint lovely hair with a mouse or track pad, I would suggest buying a simple tablet (I use a small Wacom Intuos Art) if you really want to improve and make it easier to do so. :)

How do you know where to highlight?

<font class="mainlineblack">This one is a little difficult to explain. I look for places on the horse that I want to be more defined. You have to pay attention to where the light source is. A leg in a shadow will have much fuller highlights than a leg in direct sun. What I started out doing is cruising DA and studying how other artists use highlights. It also helped me to study photos, and take notice of where the horses are naturally highlighted, i.e. muscles or defining face bones. Usually I just add highlights to the areas already highlighted on the horse. I just make them more dramatic. :)

<font class="mainlineblack"><font class="mainlineblack">Where do you find all your stock? Favorite providers?
<font class="mainlineblack"><font class="mainlineblack">
<font class="mainlineblack">I use DA, Pixabay, Unsplash, Flickr, and my accidental subscription to Adobe Stock. I would not recommend Adobe Stock; if you have money to spend on stock photos purchase some from Shutterstock. They have all the stock that Adobe does and more, and are much less expensive per image.

<font class="mainlineblack"><font class="mainlineblack">Tips on making it look like there is mist or glow around your horse?

<font class="mainlineblack"><font class="mainlineblack"><font class="mainlineblack">I create a new layer behind my horse, then use a large soft round brush with a light color from the background. Then a set the layer mode to screen and adjust the opacity to create a subtle look.
<font class="mainlineblack"><font class="mainlineblack"><font class="mainlineblack">
<font class="mainlineblack"><font class="mainlineblack"><font class="mainlineblack"><font class="mainlineblack">How do you get the horse to really fit into the background, color-wise, stance wise and such?

When I'm choosing my horse and background for a piece, I think of a few things. Can I get the lighting to match easily? Will the colors of the background compliment the horses finished color? Does the horses pose fit the background well?

If the backgrounds lighting is obvious different than the lighting on the horse you image will always look off, 100% of the time. If the horse I'm using is lit from the side I'm not going to put it in a background that has the light source coming from directly above. Also, don't forget to add properly placed shadow. Pay attention to lighting in real life and photos. Different light sources cause different types of shadows. I bright sun will cast a bolder shadow then a dim lamp.

I like my background colors to compliment my horse's coat. If I am using a white horse, I might pick a background that has a little bit of white in it; flowers, clouds, bones, rocks, etc.

It's important to fit the horse's pose to the background as well. If the horse will be climbing a hill in the finished piece, I'm not going to pick one that is obviously standing on a flat surface.

And lastly, I like to create a new layer, clip it to my horse layer, and using a large soft round brush I will give my horse some hues from the background. Say the horse is standing in grass, with a blue sky above. I'll take the green from the grass and paint it on the horse's legs, and give his back just a touch of blue. Then I set the layer on soft light and adjust the opacity as needed.

1. When I decided I was very unhappy with my mane/tail ability, or lack there of, I took a month an forced myself to practice nothing but hair. I search DA and YouTube for tutorials and found several different methods. It took me a little bit and I found the one that I liked best. It's similar to this one.

While it's by no means impossible to paint lovely hair with a mouse or track pad, I would suggest buying a simple tablet (I use a small Wacom Intuos Art) if you really want to improve and make it easier to do so. :)

2. I usually use an 80% round brush and cut my horse out with the eraser. If the horse has any unsightly marks I don't like (like white spots from saddle sores) I use the spot healing tool to quickly remove them. I then go to Filters > Noise > Reduce Noise. Find a setting you like that smooths the horse a bit without losing detail. I then duplicate the layer and clip it to the original horse layer. (If you do not know how to do this, a quick search on Google will do wonders. :D) This will keep our edges sharp. Then, using a soft round brush on 8% opacity, I smudge the horse. Be sure to keep features clean; don't smudge over the eye or other distinguishing parts of the horse. You want to smooth him, not blur him into unrecognizablity. :)
