I have never "self-care board". I have worked at boarding facilities, kept my horses at home, and I have done full care board, but never self-care. ~ I am looking at boarding my horse next winter at a local arena that only offers self-care. You get a pen for yourself self and you have to supply everything (feed, water, clean your pen, etc...). The arena is only 15 minutes away from my farm and I could go twice a day to do my chores but as I have a baby and responsibilities on my home farm I want to only go once a day. Also with fuel prices, driving in twice a day just to feed starts to add up ~ Anyone else who self-care boards only go once a day? What does your setup look like? Do you have a water trough? Or do you use buckets? What about feed? ~ Any help will be appreciated!

I don't board exactly, but my horses are about 10-15 minutes away from my house. I go once daily and just give them a bunch of hay spread out along the fencelines(it's not very dusty/sandy there, and they get psyllium every month) and it's enough to last til the next day.

I would assume they are on auto water then? My biggest worry is water honestly. I could use a trough but filling it would be a pain. And I know two buckets of water are not enough to last 24 hours. When using buckets I have always topped them off with fresh water twice a day

Could you make a friend there and take care of their horse in the morning in exchange for caring for theirs at night? It'll make it easier for you to go out of town too, if someone else can look after your horse.

Could you just possibly hall in to use their arena?
