Lost money on member show, despite placing?

This might be a dumb question, but it's never happened before and seems weird to me.

8/21 I put 3 different horses into 3 different classes in a member show for 500ebs each. 1 horse placed 1st in their class and received 750 ebs. The other horses placed 3rd and 4th, but only won 281 and 211ebs.

Is this normal when there are only a few entries in a show or something?

It just seems odd to lose money, especially when placing 3rd, but I could understand if it's so 1st and 2nd get their payouts.

I just want to know for sure.

You dont win money in member shows if you do not place over half. Ie. 4 hoses entered, 2 win money, 2 lose.

It's a gamble.
