Do these really improve the horses and riders or is this just more for fun? I've been using them on some of my better horses but not sure I'm seeing the value.

They do improve training - but this training effort will not get inherited.
So its possible to train up a very weak trait on a show horse via a lot of special clinics.
But it will not pass it on to any foals.
