What makes a good breeder? October 19, 2020 11:26 AM

Is there more than one idea or definition of a 'good breeder'? Feel free to share your opinion or idea of what makes a horse a 'good breeder'.
.
I previously made a thread with a list where stables selecting for any 'good breeders' could add their stable name to a list, but no one seems to have done so. [Edited: I just realized I never updated it with a list of 'strong' breeds or 'weak' breeds for each list]This has led me to wonder if there may be more than one idea or definition of a 'good breeder'. I was going off of Hyrim Canyon's online HEE guide, but I wonder if other stables define a 'good breeder' differently.
I didn't want to clutter up previous threads, so I thought I would start a new one instead.
.
My currently oversimplified understanding from Hyrim Canyon's HEE guide is that when you have PPP or stronger ratings of both parents together, most of the foals should be no weaker than PPP. Any strong or weaker-rated ratings, including SEE ratings, appear to count as 'weak' for the intention of the list.
.
Oversimplified Visual example:
PPP x PPP
Foals PPP or better are good
SSS or weaker ratings, SPE, and SEE ratings are considered 'weak'
.
My present understanding is that even WWW-mare paired with a WWW-stallion may each be considered 'good breeders' if the majority of their foals have at least PPP-rated foals, using the list to decide if they bred enough good-rated foals to be considered a 'good breeder'.
.

.
My previous thread: https://horseeden.com/forums.php?f=6&t=38740 List of stables selecting for good breeder horses in Horse Eden Eventing sub-forum. I made this thread previously in hopes that other stables selecting for 'good breeders' would consider adding themselves to this list. They don't have to breed exclusively for it, just to select at least some of their horses or ponies for 'good breeders' based on their foal production.

Only thing that make a good breeder is the horses training i would call any horse that you plan on useing for breeding if there not all up on or havent improved on WK5

I base a good breeder on production and training. Training for me is just an indication of the horse's strength. I've had horses with crappy wk 4s and 8s showing gaining two or more training bars wk 12. However if a horse is down a training bar wk 6 or 10 you can tell it won't be any good for your breeding program (assuming it's a PEE+ horse and for AD I wouldn't recommend using anything beneath that). It also depends on the rating. I expect a EWE+ combo to train stronger than a PEE or EEE.
Also horses with strong training can still be crappy producers.
Production is the best way to determin whether a horse is a good breeder or not. If a mare consistently produces better than her own rating, than she's a good breeder. If she never produces better than her own rating, she's an ok breeder. If she produces worse than her own rating more than twice, she's a crappy producer and I'd weed her out. If I had a WWW mare and she produced more than one PPP I'd consider her a weak producer (given she's been matched properly to a LB stud).

Same goes with SD. Training is a better indication SD than AD. I've never had a mare not all training bars up wk4 produce good. With production I'm even stricter than AD. If an E-mare hasn't produced a W by age 5, I cull her (I'm only sending them to high LB studs, so if there's no W, it's on her). Edit: same goes with W-mares, they have to produce Ws or they're gone
