I've received this question a lot over the past few days, so thought I'd post what I do. This is just what I do, and to some of you it may look crazy, but it has worked for me. I breed between 200-300 mares a year. And I have breeding reports like this.

E/E/E: 1
P/E/E: 7
E/E/P: 13
E/E/S: 1
S/E/E: 3
P/P/E: 6
E/P/P: 18
P/E/P: 25
P/P/P: 104

The ones that have been set free are almost ALL PPS, SPP, PSP with a few double superb/premium combos. I have a rare few SSS, like maybe 3 or 4. Those are normally from weak freshmen. This is my overall breeding report.

E/E/E: 8
E/P/E: 4
E/E/P: 39
P/E/E: 51
E/E/S: 3
S/E/E: 18
P/P/E: 65
E/P/P: 112
P/E/P: 218
E/P/S: 23
S/E/P: 30
S/P/E: 31
P/P/P: 1222
P/S/P: 32
P/P/S: 244
S/P/P: 497

9 of my 11 breeding stallions are on the All Breeds Leaderboard list. They are also scattered about on the various other boards too. Arrogante isn't on a leaderboard, but he is the games only wild PPP apricot stallion and actually produces very well. Magnetic Moon is also special to me and has produced an EEE, so he gets to stay for a few of my pearl/apricot mares.

I also have 9 mares on the All Breeds Leaderboard list, and more that I bred are on there, but I no longer own. I have more mares scattered on the other leaderboards as well.

These are my awards from last year.

So I can safely say I do think my system works.

Now, you won't like my advice. LOL But it does work. Even my mares that aren't on the leaderboards generally produce their ratings or higher. Anything less than PPP is set free. I do not breed them AT ALL. That being said, I do have three mares that are EES that I breed, one is a wild apricot (duh!) and the other two have outproduced themselves. I also have an SEE filly that I am selling. Those are the rare cases.

Mares
PPP mares - sell them for no more than 45k each (exception to this rule is if they have produced very well or have a top 10 sire or dam as a parent). ONLY keep the ones that have produced a double elite. If they don't sell within 2 weeks, set them free. Crazy, right? Look back above at my ratings and awards. :) Now, that being said, I do have some PPP mares. I have 81 keepers. I have 41 PPP mares that are currently for sale. Most, if not all, are by leaderboard sires. But they didn't make my cut. Doesn't mean they wouldn't work for some of the smaller stables that don't care as much about ratings, and may help the color stables too, so that's why I sell before setting free.

EPP combos, if they have never produced ratings as good as themselves OR higher, sell them, no more than 65k each(exception to this rule is if they have produced very well or have a top 10 sire or dam as a parent). EPP and PPE sell better than PEP. I even sell double elite combos if they haven't produced as good as themselves.

Test mares? No, not a good idea.If a PPP mare is only producing PPP or less, how good of a test mare is she really? I don't keep test mares. My boys have to produce well with my good mares. I don't want mediocre mares to test my boys on. If I do want to test something, I use public broods if I'm out of mares.

I normally start culling when they are 5 years old. However, if I have a 4 year old that has not produced anything better than a single premium her first two shots, they go bye bye too.

Stallions

I am EXTREMELY harsh on my boys. Some of you are going to be shocked at how harsh I am. That being said, I hate having a lot of stallions. I despise it. I'd rather have a small band of extremely strong stallions than a large band of mediocre stallions. I do a lot of straw trades that helps bring new blood into my herd so I don't have to worry about inbreeding or crazy weaknesses running rampage through my barns anymore.

I currently have 26 stallions. Out of those, 2 are for sale. The only reason I am selling those two is they have awesome colors. But if they don't sell within the next few weeks, they get the snip too. I gelded 54 colts this year. 15 of them were EPP combos. The double elite/premium combos normally get either sold or tested. I do have 2 PEE combo geldings because they didn't make the cut as stallions. If a colt from a leaderboard stallion is not at least the same ratings, they have a chance of being cut. PPP are always cut....unless it's a great color, then I sell them to color breeders. I do not use them myself.

After 10 foals, if they are not on the all breed leaderboard, they have a chance of being cut or set free. I don't care what other leaderboard they are on. Exception to this rule is if those 10 foals are awesomely rated and/or the stud has an awesome color, like El Milagro. Wild PEE double pattern. He produces well. But, if he hadn't, he would have been sold or cut.

So there you go.

Hello and good morning/day/night,

I've been looking through verious things on culling and I was wondering how much all of this shifts with the addition of of the World Class rating and the current market. For instance, on this guide thingy, https://hyrimcanyon.weebly.com/culling.html, Hyrim talks about PPP foals as qualifying towards keeping a mare, but at this point in time an EEE mare that throws all PPPs is not particularly impressive.

To anyone reading this, have a nice day!

I was wondering the EXACT same thing. Would we be able to have someone create an updated version for culling? I've just been looking at mares with PPP, EE combos and EEE rated foals in their breeding report.

To help answer this for both of you:
This thread is OLD. Back when PEP mares sold for 65k...
In simple terms, PEP mares (unless very colorful, PEE+ consistent producing or with E+ bravery) should be sold or free ranged. They are not valuable anymore.
PEE mares are fine to start out but they should be producing at least PEP+ consistently. The market for PEE mares without lots of color is severely decreasing. But they are a good starting point.
EEE+ mares are the "in" right now. These are what you want. Breed them to nice studs to helpl keep good rating flowing. Then again, if they have bad training or non LB pedigrees plus bad production. Sell or free range. It's all about keeping the strong ladies!
~
Now, PPP mares. Don't even bother with them unless they are ultracolorful or have nice bravery. They can't be depended upon when breeding.
