It is your first day at your new job. Before you can even walk in the door, a crash cart whizzes past you, an utterance of sorries emitting from the team of doctors and nurses sprinting down the hallway. A little ways down the brightly-lit hallway, you hear your medicinal idol, Doctor Mason Harvey, giving the welcome speech to the largest crowd you've ever seen: "...look around you, at all three thousand, two hundred, twenty six other applicants. By next week, based on your performance, only two hundred will remain. Once the eight weeks of testing finish out for that two-hundred, there will only be eight of you. Welcome to the Harvey School for Elite Young Doctors, everyone. Don't unpack your suitcases, you likely won't be staying long."

***

The Harvey School is located in Chicago, Illinois, and has emerged as one of the best hospitals around the world in just four short years. It is a home for innovation and creation, with state of the art facilities that cultivate a medical professional's dream. There is one man responsible for the great success behind this hospital, this realm for higher education, for newer education: Mason Harvey.

The son of a world-renowned cardiovascular surgeon, Doctor Harvey had big shoes to fill--he has filled them and then some by completely revolutionizing the way doctors look at medicine. His strong belief that education goes further than a PhD has evolved into a program for licensed, experienced doctors who feel unresolved, as if they are not reaching their full potential. In its first year, over three-thousand applicants have applied and traveled to Chicago for this amazing opportunity, but in the next several weeks that will be whittled down to eight full-time positions offered to the very best in their respective fields. At the Harvey School for Elite Young Doctors, nothing is certain, so be careful.

Dr. Mason Harvey | 9:23am | Devin, Open

Mason sat in his office on the highest floor of the hospital, staring at a model of a heart with a profound expression. He had only been up there five minutes when he heard the door click and swing open. This was typical, having absolutely no time on his hands for anything other than work. It seemed like the hospital staff kept him on as tight of a leash as he did them. He could never get too far during a shift without being needed elsewhere, which was a blessing and a curse. He'd chosen this life because it kept him extremely busy, but being so stressed all the time had its own downfalls. He didn't seem to mind too much, but those around him did. They worried about him.

"Funny how you can understand other people's hearts but you can't understand your own, huh, Doc?"

"What do you need, Rhodes?"

"I don't need anything, I just came to check on you. We used to be friends, remember?"

"That was like, twenty years ago, Rhodes. So, again, I ask, what do you need?"

"Well, some of the applicants are starting to pile in, so the first floor staff suggested you go down and give your speech early so they don't have to crowd control..."

Sighing with his back still to his friend, his eyes still studying the heart emotionlessly, he replied, "I'll be down in seven minutes. Tell the staff that whoever does not get there promptly by the time I arrive is terminated from the program, effective immediately."

...

The woman's breath came out shakily, soon turning into choking breaths, then very little at all. While this was occurring, Devin met Mason at the base of the elevator, a concerned look on his face.

"Spit it out, Rhodes."

"A patient is coding in the waiting room."

Instead of directly responding to the man, Dr. Harvey quickened his pace to a jog as he covered ground, trying to avoid the gigantic swarm of people in the waiting room mixed with patients. It was impossible to see who was who, which were doctors and which were patients. He couldn't even see two inches in front of his face.

"You all are doctors, I expect that if you see something, you do something!" He yelled in an irritable tone, loud enough to let the racket quell completely. In the silence, he could still hardly make out where he was supposed to be going.

"And if you aren't willing to do something, you don't belong in my hospital! Everyone out of the way!"

As everyone quickly moved aside, clearing him a path, he searched the remainder of the crowd, still rageful due to the lack of organization occurring. He dearly hoped one of these applicants had already gotten to the patient, or surely she was dead or dying by now, and he was no closer to locating her.

Dr. Elyse Barnes-Grey| 9:24am| Open

Elyse fidgeted with the ring on her left hand, her gaze glancing around at the many people around her. Her stomach felt like it was doing flip-flops with how nervous she felt, perhaps even a bit nauseous. The crowd was huge to where she isn't used to so many people in one place. Crowds always tend to make her feel nervous, making her always tend to avoid them. Yet, she knew that a crowd this big is to be expected as it is the best hospital in the world. She would do anything to be a part of it no matter what she has to do. She loves helping people and being here meant she could help even more people.

She glanced around again, not sure where her husband is. She kind of wasn't paying attention to where they were going and got separated in the crowd. She will do fine without him, but it felt odd that they came together but he is nowhere to be seen. He is a tall dude. Where the heck is he? It doesn't matter as she can't worry about him right now. They are both competing to get into this hospital, which means that she is competing against him. She can't really rely on him during this time if she wants to prove that she belongs here. She knows that she belongs here, but that is up to the person who owns this hospital if she is fit enough to work here.

She saw people crowding around something before she heard someone yelling. Her gaze went in that direction, her eyes widening when she realized that someone is coding. No one crowding around them is really not going to do anything? How stupid of them. "Get out of my damn way!" She yelled, pushing people off to the side as she moves her way easily through the crowd. There is no way she is going to let someone die on her watch even if she doesn't work here. She still can't believe no one was even trying to attempt anything on the patient in the crowd that is surrounding the person.

She finally broke through the mass of people, her gaze instantly flickering around to make sure the area is safe before approaching the woman on the floor. She instantly went to her knees, her fingers pressing against the inside of her wrist to check for a pulse. No pulse. Damnit. "Move back. You are in my space and it is suffocating." She growled, her gaze flickering around as the people seemed to finally move further out. "And for the life of me, someone get me an AED." She laced her hands together before putting her hands on the woman's chest between her breasts. She locked her arms, sitting up slightly before she started to do chest compressions. Thirty compressions to two breaths and she sang the song 'Staying Alive' in her head to keep her rhythm.

Dr. Logan Grey | 9:26am | Open

No less than five minutes after Logan had arrived at the hospital was he pulled into the ER to begin working. He was walking with another senior doctor in the building who at this time was just giving him a tour of the hospital. Honestly, he was bored of the tour. He wanted nothing more than to just jump in and get into the medicine. When he arrived here, he was with his wife, Elyse. Because she was an applicant and he was a resident, they were quickly separated and filtered off to their respective places.

As they arrived into the Emergency Room bay, it was already full of patients. Some were in the waiting room, obviously waiting to be seen, others were in the beds being seen. Logan hoped that there would be some sort of trauma coming in, sometime soon. That was what really interested him, any sort of exciting emergency or bad trauma. The doctor that was giving him the tour finally left him alone, letting him search around the ER as he pleased for the time being.

He leaned back on the counter, watching over his new territory for a moment. He wondered if he would fit in here, if he would survive. But really, he didn't have a choice. A siren caught his attention, followed by others asking if they could have some help with a patient coming in on an ambulance. Logan couldn't help it, he didn't really know what he was allowed to do, but he wanted to help. He jogged over to where they were bringing the patient in, just in time to hear what the patient came in for.

"29 year old female in a head-on MVC, GCS 13 on scene, Vitals stable en route, complaining of pain in the upper neck and back as well as the left leg...." One of the EMTs rambled off more as he went with them and other doctors and nurses into a trauma room.

(Bruh this sucks but I wanted to get something out there so meh here)

Dr. Elias Lee | Anaesthesiology | 9:28 | Dr. Barnes - Grey

Walking through the revolving doors into the state-of-art hospital, Elias found it odd how similar yet different the setting was to his previous hospital. There, he'd worked as a student and up through till he left for America. Perhaps that was the source of this odd feeling of emptiness. Heading for the main reception, he mentioned the purpose for his visit and was guided to one of the coordinators who gave him the quickest tour he ever had. It was fast-paced in every aspect - the walking speed as well as the rate of her speech and flippant gestures - and for someone who just arrived from a foreign country, it was more difficult to keep up.

At least, once he got into the job, it would be more interesting. Considering his additional experience in pain medicine, he wasn't sure whether he wanted to start in the operating room or in a more clinical setting. As abruptly as the tour started, it was concluded. "That should give an overview for you. You'll get lost a lot without doubt of course. Dr. Harvey should be arriving soon for a speech so just go through that door and wait for him. There will be more applicants arriving."

Elias watched as she merged into the swarms of people before heading towards the door. Under his breath, he muttered a thankful prayer to his parents for his genes for height. He didn't want to imagine how crushed shorter people were feeling. From the further end of the corridor, he heard a shouted command and the sound of the corridor eerily went silent. He made his way through, pushing aside various people and muttering apologies in the direction of the open circle in the middle. As he came to the fringe of the circle, a nurse rushed with an AED kit. Thanking her, he took it and settled by the patient and the other doctor on the floor, rapidly opening and preparing it for usage. Turning it on, he brought it closer and handed the defibrillator pads over to the first doctor.

Dr. Harvey | 9:30am | Elias, Elyse, Phoebe

By the time the hospital owner finally made it to the scene, two doctors were working diligently as others tried to claw their way into the action, but he could tell it was more for the credit than to actually save the life.

"Everybody but..." He scanned their lanyards with squinted eyes, "Doctor Barnes-Grey and Doctor Lee are relieved, thank you. And, you three...Doctor Winston, Doctor Zedrich, Doctor Reilly, you're excused from the program. If you're going to save a life, do it because you care, not because I told you to."

He watched the two doctors work together for a few more moments, finally getting the woman stable again. Within minutes after that, a stretcher finally came from the depths of the ER, the huge mass of people having nowhere to go, and therefore cultivating a delayed reaction time, which was still much quicker than most hospitals. It was amazing, actually, the amount of names that the applicants heard called within a minute. Amazing for some, terrifying for others.

...

"Hey, are you okay?"

Phoebe distantly heard another applicant's voice as she tried to focus on staying upright. She felt extremely dizzy, sweaty, and nauseous, as if she could either vomit or pass out at any moment. It was getting harder and harder for her to breathe in a room with so many other people, and being on the shorter side did not help the matters. The pressure Dr. Harvey was putting on everyone made it that much worse, and she felt almost bad enough to walk out the doors and get some fresh air. She knew, though, that once she walked out the doors, she wouldn't be allowed back in. That was almost as terrifying as the symptoms she was experiencing, and at this point, she was just trying to maintain.

She and the male doctor made eye contact as he walked past her, finding his way to where a small stage had been arranged by faculty just a short time prior. He had a certain arrogance about him as he walked, she could tell it came from pain, though, not from ego. She wondered if she'd be jaded after working here, which only made it harder to breathe. Her legs felt shaky and she started to wobble as he gave his speech.

"Good morning, Doctors--You know who I am, but I don't know who you are. The world doesn't know who you are, either. But, you have a chance to change that--don't blow it. Look around you, at all three thousand, two hundred, twenty six other applicants. By next week, based on your performance, only two hundred will remain. Once the eight weeks of testing finish out for that two-hundred, there will only be eight of you. Welcome to the Harvey School for Elite Young Doctors, everyone. Don't unpack your suitcases, you likely won't be staying long."

Nervous laughter and intermittent clapping followed, before they were quickly silenced by the speaker. "That's enough. Now, you will be split into groups based on your overseer. There are too many different sub-categories of medicine for me to properly match you at this stage, so for this first week you will be working with other doctors who may or may not be in your wing. Who you are paired with are rivals, not friends--remember that."

As the crowd erupted in noise again, he slammed his fist on the wooden podium just loud enough to cause silence. "Enough. The overseers will call you by their groups of forty, you must assemble with them in your designated location at four this evening. And, yes, it will take that long to get through this process. If you don't hear your group, you weren't listening hard enough, and I suggest you just go home now. If you don't want to wait with this crowd all day, I suggest the same. Now, for those of you who are committed, I have one more announcement before I excuse myself: effective starting next week, I will be overseeing the top ten doctors based on performance." A series of gasps erupted, since he was the medicinal idol of so many, and each doctor knew exactly what this meant. Many had spent medical school obsessing over his publications and dreaming about just being in this building, let alone having such an intimate relationship with him. "More information about this will be given once the top two-hundred are chosen. So, don't screw up this week. Thank you."

As he walked off the small podium, applause erupted. About ten minutes followed before the first overseer began calling names. This was the beginning of the best and worst experience of each doctor's life, and every single one knew it.

[going to ask a logistics question in the discussion, please go take a look :)]

Dr.Conway | pediatrics | 9:28-9:40 | Dr,Harvey,open

Camorra walked into the hospital where Dr.Harvey was about to give his speech. She just got done touring her wing when she saw the huge crowd waiting for the speech as well. Camorra left her hospital to prove she can provide the best care for children. She listened very closely to the speech and she knew that this might be tough but she was willing to do all of the hard work in order to stay and even though she had a daughter she would figure out a way so she can have both work and a family. After the speech ended she along with everyone else clapped and they began to listen as the overseer called their names so Camorra listened very closely. While she waited she looked around the room and noticed she was by a few other doctors but she didn't know any of them yet.

Dr. Emilia Davis | Peds Surgery | 9:31am | Dr. Harvey, Dr. Barnes-Grey

Emilia walked into the bustling hospital, eager for her first day. She had a smile on her face, as it always was. It made her approachable, and she never minded it. She seemed to always have people coming to her with questions, or for help, whatever they needed. Though she was sociable, approachable, she stayed to the back of the room, scanning it with scrutinizing eyes. She knew that though she could befriend these people, they were also her competition. She had to stay in this program, she had no choice.

Just as she was beginning to look at each and every person in the room, a recognizable person stepped out in the front of everyone. It was the one and only Dr. Harvey. She listened to his words, and a little smile came to her face. Was that really supposed to be inspiring? She thought, raising a brow. The thought of not staying long scared her slightly, but she knew that she was good enough to stay, and that's why she was here.

She appluaded along with the rest of everyone else. And her eyes landed on the woman who saved the patient in the waiting room. She put on her smile again and walked over to the woman, giving her a little nod when she was close enough. "Hey, that was some save there. Way to impress." She commented, crossing her arms over her chest. If she should get to know her competition, she may as well start now, right?
