Help! I would love to know what you use for tack cleaning products! Share your tack cleaning tips and tricks as well! - - - I need a new Tack Cleaner - but there's way too many products out there (of varying effectiveness and price) - let me know what you use and/or your experiences! Effax Leather Balm has been an amazing leather conditioner, but I have some grimy tack that needs a good soaping. Leather New was always a go-to, but a friend mentioned SmartPak's Leather Lover Cleaner and Conditioner! There's just too many to choose from! My tack is typically older and needs TLC - and soaking in neatsfoot only did so much (and has a tendency to destroy older style stitching) Share your Products and general Tack Cleaning Hacks, Tips, & Tricks! |

I just use leather new cleaner because it is the only thing to get around here and it works great on all colors and types of leather. Only thing I advise against is any kind that says to mix with water. A friend, being as amazing as she is, took my imported, 4k german custom saddle and used her water mix on it. The next day, the smooth leather was like a cats tounge. Oil it heavy after every ride and it got better after a year or so. Her stuff worked fine for her older, harder jump saddle, but didnt agree with mine. |

For a true soap, I have used the Stubben Saddle Soap for years. Glycerine base, doesn't totally die in the heat, comes off nicely on a dry or damp sponge and works beautifully into tack. Also, it doesn't smell of an old lady house like some do.
I'm passionate about my leather care and cleaning, so I go in after every ride with that soap first, really buff it in, and then follow with a leather balm. The effax one you mentioned is a great option.
I should mention that my tack is all English tack, and I cannot give any guarantee for western tack xD |

I've always used Lexol leather cleaner, followed up with their conditioner, neatsfoot oil on the rough sides of the tack, and then glycerine soap. None of this stuff is very fancy but it gets the job done effectively and has kept all my old tack beautiful and supple. But for the grimiest tack, I start with water and a pot scrubber to gently remove the worst of the dirt-- this is also really good for stress points that have turned silver. Be careful not to overdo it, as you can harm the leather by scrubbing too hard! |
