Debut Or Not?

Life as a trainee is a difficult one. Everyone knows that. And yet, some people still choose to go through with it, just to fulfill their dreams. But no one can escape the mental and physical torture placed on them from day one. So many people quit. Now, what remains is - will this trainee give in or hold up against all odds?

Prologue

The young boy was ecstatic when the call came through that he had selected by the company. His hard work paid off. He was in the company he wished to be under. He was supported by friends and family. Life was quite perfect for the fifteen year old.

He began packing his suitcases the moment it had truly sunk in and registered. All of his clothes, his toothbrush, his comb - everything - was somehow shoved into a singular suitcase through the combined weight of the family pressing the lid down. That night, he could not rest easily, his mind twisting and turning in deep thought. He even got up at one point just to try and tire himself out. But the methods were a bit ineffective and he had seemingly just closed his eyes as fierce knocks on the door broke into his sleep and forcefully kicked him awake.

Within minutes, he was downstairs, fully dressed and ready to go. He selected a peach for breakfast and made his way out to where the chauffeur was waiting with his father. His mum was by the doorway with his siblings, waiting to say farewell. He gave all three of them warm hugs though he held onto his mum the longest before making his way down the steps to the car that would take him to a new life...

Chapter 1

The ride to the allocated address was a long one that took them down both highways and winding country roads. Along the way, the young boy did many activities. He read a book, stared out of his window and tallied the different types of cars they passed, played music on his phone and even slept towards the end.

As the sleek car pulled to a gliding stop, Min Joon suddenly awakened. He had dozed off with his head on the window and now, his neck and shoulders were feeling stiff. The young boy blinked a few times as the car door was opened for him before he stepped out in front of a small building.

The building was not exactly what people would call old but it certainly was not new either. It was a massive white square with a small black door in the centre on the wall opposite him. The paint was peeling in some areas and the wooden steps leading up to the door were bending heavily under the weight, threatening to snap. Min Joon reached out to the door handle and attempted to open the door. It was jammed slightly and thus, required a small shove to open it.

Upon entering, he was met with a wooden floor, recently renovated and baby blue walls that lined the corridor that seemed to stretch on forever. He glanced to his left, a narrow staircase leading up to the second and third floor that were used as dorms. As he was taking in his surroundings, a short man came out of one of the doors to his right. 'You're Min Joon, right? Leave the suitcase, one of the boys can take it up. Come with me...'

The boy hesitantly followed the older man down the corridor, listening carefully and the man quickly pointed out the uses for each room. 'This is the two vocal training rooms. That the rap training room and those two doors at the far end is obviously the dance training rooms. But those are mainly for lessons. Trainees can use lesson rooms after the lessons are finished but otherwise, they can practice in their dorms or in the main hall which you can get to via the cafeteria which that door there. Upstairs is the dorms. Quick now. Don't have all the time in the world. '

The man almost hurdled the staircase - which was producing weird noises all the while. Min Joon made haste to catch up to him, ignoring the change in the colour of the walls and how his suitcase had already been carried away. After breaching the staircase, the odd pair made their way down a few doors to number fifteen where the man knocked very fiercely. What was lying on wait?

Chapter 2

Almost as soon as the man stopped knocking, the door was swiftly opened by yet another young boy who looked directly at Min Joon. Personally, Min Joon felt that the boy was quite stuck up. Even his face looked stuck up. Short, scruffy hair. High cheekbones and nose bridge with monolid eyes that could almost be mistaken for a cat or a fox. And the scarier part was that even though the boy not much taller, he seemed to give off the aura of a giant.

'This trainee is training to be a vocalist - and he is quite good at it as well. And there's a bonus for you. You get to be roommates with him. Your suitcase is there. Be quick sharp now. Lunch is within the hour. And you don't want to miss it.' With that, the man hurried back downstairs, heading back to one of the training rooms, leaving the two boys behind.

The other boy started the conversation first.' I'm born 21st of June, 1999. You were born....?' The boy stared at Min Joon intently, without even smiling. Hesitating, Min Joon cautiously responded with a light tremor in his voice, obviously nervous. '11th of April in that year...' As his voice died out, the other boy looked shocked.

Just as Min Joon was about to ask what was wrong, the other boy had a mild outburst. 'You're my hyung too?! That means I'm the youngest in the dorm! How positively difficult...' The boy seemed to have paused so Min Joon decided to plant an input, although he never got the opportunity.

'Ohhhh! My God! I even forgot to introduce myself! I'm Baek Chin Hae. I'm one of the youngest here. I'm a vocalist. Terrible at the acting classes we have to do. Is there anything else? Hmmm... Ah! We have two roommates, they took the bottom two bunks. You can meet them later. One of them is a model! No joke. He is the most handsome guy ever! Anyways. I have the upper left bunk, so you have that one.'

The dorm door swung fully open, revealing the small room' s interior...

<div style="text-align: center;">Chapter 3
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">As the door swung back, the inside of the room was revealed. It was tiny! If 4 boys sat in a tight circle, that would be the diameter between the beds. At least, thankfully, the room was long enough to compensate slightly for how narrow it was. Directly to his right was another old door, presumably the toilet. In each of the far corners stood a metal bunk bed with a pillow and a blanket. For some odd reason, they all had the same horrible green colour that contrasted with the walls. Not that they're in an extremely good condition either. The only comforting part about this was the sunlight streaming in through the windows. <div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">Min Joon cautiously made his way in as the boy continued with his chatter. Evidently, one of his roommates was a chatterbox that had no sense of modesty and moderation. But that couldn't be helped. 'The other two are training now. Beomseok hyung was doing vocal training with the man who came out to introduce you earlier and another new trainer. Haneul hyung - that's the model one - was probably practicing his facial expression and posing. He's going to debut next month! Can you believe it?! And the number of offers he got was amazing. They had to actual turn a lot down so it could fit on the schedule! And he's super sweet. I'll miss him when he goes... Did I tell you about Beomseok hyung...'<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">Whikst the boy was sitting on one of the lower bunks and talking, Min Joon decided to unpack his cloths into the narrow, empty closet in the corner, nodding once in a while as though he was listening...

<div style="text-align: center;">Chapter 4
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">Chin Hae noticed early on that Min Joon was not paying that much attention to what he was saying. Admittedly, he didn't care too much but he decided to have some fun with it and toy around with him "...actually, you know, I'm not that hungry. Let's stay here. Yeah?" When Min Joon nodded his head in supposed attention, Chin Hae was struggling to hold in his laughter. Hand over his mouth, he apologized with his eyes before he eventually went on a laughing spree with tears shedding out of his eyes in rivers. <div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">Min Joon, having never been exposed to auch personalities before, turned hurriedly to check his roommate was alright, only to be greeted by a figure, rolling across the floor in hysterics. Confused, he asked 'I assume you'll be fine within the minute, so that we can go have lunch?" But for some reason, that sent the now-re-energizing Chin hae back into laughter. Bewildered, Min Joon had to awkwardly stand next to the bunks for the next two minutes whilst Chin Hae calmed right down and could breathe again. <div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">The pair was now sitting at one of the tables with their trays of food in front of the them. Although the portions were very small, at least there was a variety of it to compensate. By now, with less than two hours of being here, Min Joon looked haggard and exhausted, as though he'd been dragged through bushes backwards. His roommate's practical joke was not exactly well recieved as one could guess by the way they were in the cafeteria. Neither were talking when another group of trainees sat down next to them. <div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">All of a sudden, the noise level in the cafeteria went that bit higher. "Haneul hyung! How was the lesson? Enjoyable much? Jaehyunie! How's life been? I haven't seen you for ages!..." And with the noise level, he was completely forgotten about as the older trainees chatted with their friends in their own friendship groups. Already, Min Joon felt homesick and lonely, wishing to have his mother beside him to encourage him and guide him. <div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: left;">He quickly finished his food and snuck back to the dorm without anyone realizing his absence. He had the rest of the day off before tomorrow. But somehow, he wasn't too sure what on earth to do with the time. He could see his mother's face in front of him, chiding him gently, disciplining his firmly and loving him endlessly.

<div align="center">Chapter 5
<div align="center">
<div align="center">The sound of heavy, impatient knocking came through the heavy door, waking the room's inhabitants. Haneul was the first out of bed, rubbing his eyes and checking the time on the small alarm clock. 04:38. For a second, he placed his head into his hands in utter exhaustion. A minute or so passed before he got up and woke the others who had not responded to the knocks. They too had difficulty getting up; some off them literally attempted to roll off the bed and fell awkwardly on the floor. Yet, it was still too hard to get up. <div align="center">
<div align="center">By the time the boys had gotten up and showered, it was nearly five. Worried about the trainers coming and shouting at them, they hurried out of the room and down the stairs, Beomseok leading, followed by Chin Hae, Min Joon and Haneul respectively. They seperated at the bottom, the three younger ones heading down the corridor while Haneul headed out of the main door to the van waiting outside. For a moment, he paused outside, looking at the building fondly. He had been here for seven years of his life. He was only eleven when he entered the cycle. So much of his life for this moment. <div align="center">
<div align="center">That would be the last time Haneul saw the building, for by the time he finished his day's schedule, his belongings would have been transferred to a different apartment he would share with other models thay had also debuted under the company. <div align="center">
<div align="center">Meanwhile, the three boys headed down to the far room where the gym was located. It was the day they were dreading. The day where all the trainees had their weight checked. No one had eaten the day before and everyone ensured that they had used the loo - just to ensure that they would weigh that bit less on the scales. And if you met your target, you were lucky. If you didn't, poor you. You'd be on a strict diet and loose lots of training time for the gym. <div align="center">
<div align="center">It took a while for it to become their turn. First, the older trainees' weights were checked, some receiving comments, some receiving reprimands. Then it was the younger, newer trainees. Chin Hae was called up first and lead out of the room. It took a few minutes before he skipped out happily. <div align="center">'I beat my target! I'm now fifty seven kilos! I only need to loose two more before I debut!'<div align="center">
<div align="center">Beomseok went soon after, with a clap to the back from a friend. It took much longer for him and some people seated closest to the door could make out what was being yelled. <div align="center">'Can you see that figure? Can you? What does the number say, HUH? Fifty four point seven kilos. You're point seven - SEVEN - kilos heavier than you should be. What is this? You'll never debut like that. Why are your eyes going misty now? Not much use is it? I'll make a new diet for you. You're lucky you weren't a kilo over. You know what would happen then, don't you? Pig. Go.'<div align="center">
<div align="center">Min Joon didn't see Beomseok hyung come out of the door. But later he saw him in the dorms, weeping in the safety of privacy. Feeling as though he was intruding, Min Joon slowly shut the door again and left, the image imprinted on his memory...

<div align="center">Chapter 6
<div align="center">
<div align="center">The clock showed 00:32 as the Min Joon and Chin Hae were getting ready for bed. Min Joon was pausing every once in a while and glancing towards the door. He was worried about where Beomseok hyung had disappeared to after seeing him earlier in the room. Chin Hae noticed the repetitive glances and sarcastically stated 'You won't be seeing him for a while.'<div align="center">
<div align="center">'Why?' Min Joon turned his head to glance in the other's direction, his hazel eyes enquiring yet fearful of the response. 'Hmm?', Chin Hae looked up from where he was putting on a black t-shirt to hide his skinny frame and contemplated his answer, 'He'll be working himself off in the gym till around one then do the training he missed in the day and come back at around two or three. You might see him in the morning.' With that, he dismissed the conversation with a lazy wave of his hand as he slid into bed. But for confused Min Joon, the exchange wasn't over.' Why? It's literally seven hundred grams! Why do that? Is he going to eat at least?! '<div align="center">
<div align="center">' Look, newbie,' Chin Hae crossly started, 'I think he weighs fine. He's one on the lightest. But because there is no plan for a group to debut, he has the opportunity - as the trainers say - "to loose more weight" . And he hasn't met it. So now, he works himself hard because Beomseok hyung always works the hardest out of all of us.' Here, the scruffy boy paused and hung his head as the mix of anger and sadness flooded him. <div align="center">
<div align="center">'Trust me. Beomseok hyung won't even eat nor drink till he's lost it.' There was a bunch of mumbling that followed it that Min Joon heard snippets of. 'Bloody prison...we'll die...debut...' <div align="center">
<div align="center">An eerie silence settled as the lights were turned off, they got in bed and dropped off to sleep.

Chapter 7

Min Joon sighed as the squabbling behind him continued. They had just paused to review the recording and before they even got half a minute in, his roommates were already fighting over who's formation was the better one.

The young fifteen year old brushed his damp hair back, allowing his face to cool a little. Their most recent assignment was such a headache. They were supposed to take a choreography of a song and change whatever they wished. They'd already converted it into a remix, divided the parts-but, of course, no one agreed with the any of the choreography that was presented by the three. Or at least two people couldn't agree with each others ideas. Min Joon shifted his weight and pressed the replay button, trying his best not to snap at the other two behind him.

All of a sudden, silence dropped behind him. He turned to see why the petty fight stopped. And as he did so, Chin Hae let out a worried shout for help. There in the middle of the dance floor, lay a young man, unintentionally sprawled across the floor, passed out in dead faint from exhaustion. 'Shit!' Min Joon forgot all about the video and rushed over to Chin Hae's side.

Uncertain about how to deal with the issue, he managed to persuade the shocked Chin Hae to fetch someone else whilst he began checking for a pulse. Relief flooded through him like a wave as he determined that his hyung was not in any immediate danger. Help wasn't arrively as quickly as he was hoping so he started to adjust the fainted man's position to make him more comfortable.
