Unanchored

Somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean a ship, The Dauntless, is lost at sea, the raging weather pulling it even farther off course than it was the morning before. Waves crash on the already sopping deck of the large vessel, the salt liquid trickling down into the caverns within the transport's vast insides. Frantic, nervous squeals of terror and panic echo, bouncing off the sides of the ship as it is rocked once more, this time nearly setting the great beast on her side, but not quite. However, a terrible groan erupts from below, followed by the sound of scraping; the loud, jagged bellow raking through the vessel as her hull dragged across the rocks, leaving angry gouges in her beautiful crafted bottom. Water jutted instantly through the cracks, not wasting any time to set the crew up with sheer panic, a wave of horror igniting itself throughout the boat.

No, it would not be the waves that started the collapse of this ship upon itself, but rather the unseen terrain below the behemoth vessel. Perhaps it was better this way, though, because as caverns filled up, and waves slammed both human and horse against the hard surfaces of both the bottom and sides of the ship, she was steered towards the nearest sight of land, in hopes she could make it there.

With uncertainty and fear gripping the crew manning the ship, the stared at the island that grew closer and closer after each passing second. However, they also noticed the water growing closer and closer as well, alerting them they were sinking faster than they were moving. Deciding to give all species on board a fighting chance if the vessel were to sink, the brave men and women freed their prized cargo from their confines, allowing the frightened horses to thunder out on deck. Unfortunately, they would never get to know if the horses made it out alive. Just as the horses were all brought above, a colossal wave slammed into the ship, forcefully shoving it onto its broadside, leaving both animal and human alike to plunge into the freezing water below.

_______________________

All hope seemed to be lost by the time the sun began to peak over the horizon the next morning, the tragic tale of The Dauntless goes unseen. The ship's wreckage lies silent at the bottom of the sea with all the poor souls who were unable to escape the wrath of mother nature. However, some did, and as dawn gave way to morning sunshine, bruised and battered horses rose form the sea, pulling themselves onto the shore of that distant island. Exhausted and dazed, the creatures are lucky to be alive, as they're they only ones who survived the ordeal.

Unfortunately for these prized equines their journey has just begun. Surviving the wreck was one thing, but surviving the island will be an entirely separate ordeal. These horses are unwelcome visitors in the eyes of the Island horses that current reside there. These wary, wind weathered islanders are hardy creatures who view these new equines as both weak, and a threat. There may be enough resources on the island, but is there enough room?

Between the predators and horses who wish to see them fall, this group of Prized Horses has their work cut out for them. In order to survive, perhaps just until they're rescued, or longer, they will have to work together. They will have to be the herd they've never had to be before. Only through working together, and strength will they be able to overcome what's ahead. Will they survive, or even thrive? Or will they sink just like The Dauntless?

Island Herd Rules

1. No relations with horses outsie of the herd. This includes: bachelors, lones or domesticated horses.

2. Horses are not to wander off without notifying a lead, or without permission. Troublesome horses can and will be punished for their disobediance and disrespect.

3. Stallions DO have to gain permission from the Lead Stallion to court a mare. Mated Pairs also must get permission from the Lead Mare if they wish to have a foal. This is to keep population in check.

4. For a horse to join the herd, a herd member must vouch for them. If the new horse messes up, the punishment will be for both them and the horse that vouches for them.

5. In order to challenge the Lieutenant, permission from the Lead Stallion must first be gained.

______________________________

Brief Herd Role Explanations

A lot of these are common sense so I'm only going to touch on the need to know things.

Lead Stallion
The stallion who leads the herd and is in charge of it with his mate, the Lead Mare. His word is law, to disobey him is basically treason. His position can be challenged for, but if you lose, you may die. The Lead Stallion can choose to have foals with just his Lead Mare, or with any willing mare within the herd. He is in charge of the Stallions and Mares within the herd, and decides who stays and who gots to go. He also decides, along with the Lead Mare, if a horse gets to join the herd.

Lead Mare
This is the mare who leads along side the Lead Stallion, is commonly his mate. She is in charge of the foals and the mares, but the herd is expected to respect her. The Lead Mare's foals are typically always sired by the LS, as they are usually mates. In the case that they are not, she must get permission from the LS to have foals with another. She is not a role that can be challenged for, however, the LS can replace her with another if he thinks it is necessary.

Lieutenant
This is the stallion that the LS appoints to help lead and protect the herd. While it is expected for all stallions to protect the herd, this is the one that helps the Lead with direct challenges. He helps run the herd, facilitating the Lead Stallion's orders. He is also trained and prepared to take over if something were to happen to the Lead Stallion. His rank can be challenged for, but it must first gain the approval of the LS. If a challenger loses, the Lieutenant gets to decide the punishment for them.

Herd Mares
These are the mares of the herd. They all help to take care of each other's foals, and make sure the herd remains safe and healthy. There is a hierarchy within the mares that is determined by them, and it is rarely challenged, though occasionally mares move up and down the totem pole. Typically older mares are higher than younger mares, and the higher a mare is on the totem pole, the more respected she is when bringing up an issue.

Herd Stallions
These are the stallions within the herd. Like the mares, there is a natural hierarchy within this role, and like the mare, it is usually based off age. However, its more likely to be contested, as stallions typically strive to lead or have their own herd. They are tasked with keeping the herd safe from threats, and alerting the Leads when there are issues in regards to safety. Stallions do have to be a bit more careful about toeing the line, but unless they are trying to usurp or undermine the LS they have little to fear.

Fillies
These are all the females foals and yearlings under the age of 2 years old. Once they turn two, the enter the adult roles. Foals are expected to mind the adults in the herd at all time.

Colts
These are the male foals and yearlings under the age of 2 years old. Once they turn two, they can either choose to stay or leave. Either way, like the fillies, they are expected to mind the adults in the herd at all time.

Elders
These are mares and stallions within the herd that are past their prime, and typically no longer able to have foals. Typically the age for an elder is around 18-20+. Since there are fewer threats on the island, most of the horses live to an old age, and are able to live long lives. They are respected within the herd, and treated well. They often act as story tellers and words of wisdom.

Island Information

The Island

The Island Horses refer to it as Verloren Island, or Simply Verloren.

It is primarily forested, the north eastern portion of the island though does have mountains and cliffs. The Southern coastline is all really nice beach, but the Northern coastline is mostly jagged cliffs that would kill anyone if they fell off them into the water below. On the Lower Western side of the island there is a small hilly, grassland area that eventually leads to a really nice, calm beach. There is a small lagoon on the South Eastern side of the Lagoon. There are several creeks that run across the island that provide freshwater, as well as ponds and vernal pools that collect water when it rains.

The island is large enough to sustain other wildlife as well. It allows a species of deer, squirrel, rabbit, and various other herbivores to take up residence. Predator wise, the main concerns are cougars and coyote packs. There are also sharks, but unless a horse ventures into the ocean, there's little worry. There are a variety of species on the island who are carnivorous, but are no threat to horses such as foxed, birds, and other small animals.

Throughout the year, storms often frequent the island. Everything from minor rain, to near hurricane, has graced the beaches of the island. Most of the animals there have learned, with time, how to deal and survive such occurances, but the storms, primarily the bad ones, still take lives. Thankfully, they have learned how to predict the storms through the scent of the air, and are able to venture to the best places to take shelter by the time the storm actually hits.

The Current Month in the Rp will be May; so the Season will be Summer. The weather is a little warm, but doesn't seem to go above 90 degrees. It's humid, and there's usually a salt breeze in the air. At night, the island drops to a chilly 60 degrees, and in the mountains or by the ocean, it gets colder. Overall, the weather is fairly pleasant right now.

The Wild Horses

To call the horses of Verloren "mustangs" would not necessarily be accurate. No one is 100% where the horses of the Island originated from, but it is likley they are a mash up of a bunch of breeds that has turned into what the Island Horse is now. They come in a variety of sizes and colors, ranging from perlino to black pinto, and so much more. Their sizes, though, range from 14 hands minimum, up to 18 hands, though the latter is relatively rare, most topping out at 16-17 hands. Most of the island horses have more average builds, well muscled to lean, but none are anything close to what a draft's build might look like. The Island just isn't very friendly to such large horses. On the Island, larger size does not necessarily mean they have the advantage.

The Island Horses live a life that is both balanced, but can be hard. Foals, elders, and sick or injured horses are easy prey for the predators that roam the island, though healthy adults are rarely in danger. However, the storms that often plague the island have turned the horses that live there into hardy creatures, often able to navigate the island without fully looking. The terrain can be troublesome to some, but for the most part the horses of the island know the island better than most. They know when the best time to graze in certain places, where the best places are to take shelter from storms, they often know how to seek out places to get water that is drinkable.

Domesticated Horse

Name: Phila
Age: 8
Gender: Mare
Breed: Thouroghbred
Desired Rank: Mare
Appearance: Phila has a typical TB build, lean and strong, long legs, strong chest and hindquarters and a strong back. Her coat is blood bay with lots of contrast. She has overo markings on both sides of her stomach and her neck. She has a stripe down her face and two blue eyes. She has one small sock on her right front leg. Her mane and tail are a brilliant silver color, they are long and well kept(at first).
Personality: Phila has a cold and somewhat mean personality. She has a tendency to say exactly what shes thinking no matter how rude of mean it may be. She is very determined and if she sets her mind on something she will, by all means, accomplish it. She is very slow to anger, but when she does get upset she loses all rationality and would rather fight than try to reason. She tends to have a uncaring outwards attitude. She will usually keep any emotions or feelings to herself, except anger or opinions of others. While she usually appears to be cold and unfearful, her deepest fear is being alone, so even though others might not enjoy her presence, she will always be around other horses. Her caring side is deeply buried and has not surfaced in years, she has never truly cared for anyone other than her mother. After she was separated from her mother, she never warmed up to any other horse or human. If she finds the right horse, in the future, she may begin to open up and care. Her caring side is extremely protective and defensive, she will cling desperately to whovever she cares for.
(May add or change if something happens to her during rp)
Discipline: Cross Country
Crush: None Yet
Mate: None Yet
Foals: None Yet
Other: Her "best friend" at her old farm was a young Arabian mare.

Wild Horse

Name: Gannon
Age: 7
Gender: Stallion
Breed: [Will be Island Horse]
Herd Rank: Herd Stallion
Desired Rank: Herd Stallion
Appearance:
Personality: Gannon is a fun loving, goofy, childish stallion. He rarely takes things seriously and has a love for adventure and anything supidly dangerous. He loves being around other horses and lives for fun. He takes everything in stride and always has a solution to problems. Despite his bouncy, always happy attitude, he is hiding some serious trauma. The horse he loved most, his mother, was killed by a predator in front of his eyes when he was young. He is extremely sensitive, and harsh words will hurt even though he hides it with a laugh. He is very loving towards his friends and is always willing to help. Gannon rarely gets angry and has a lot of patience, when he does get angry though, it reveals a totally different side of him. He does keep a rational head, but his anger will turn into steel cold hate. While he has never been serious enough for any big responsabilities, he may have to take on some new things as the island changes.
Thoughts on Ship Wrecked Horses: Gannon, as usual, sees them as a new adventure, something exciting for him to discover. He has no reason to fill poorly towards them.
Crush: None Yet
Mate: None Yet
Foals: None Yet
Other: ^^

Domesticated Horse

Registered Name

The Blue Beauty

Barn Name

Maya

Age

Just Turned 5 yrs

Gender

Mare

Breed

Quarter Horse and Arabian Cross (Quarab)

Desired Rank

Herd Mare (she just wants some comfort now)

Height

14.2 HH (exactly meets minimum horse height)

Weight

900 lbs

Appearance

The mare honestly doesn't resemble much of an arabian. The only more distinctive parts are her more delicate and slight chiseled head, slimmer front half of her body, and a lighter weight. Other then that she carries the usual Quarter Horse muscular body, yet with a bit less muscles and a slight leaner look to her. Adding that she was a show horse, she has had her mane and tail kept up and so they are long, silky, thick, and healthy. And she is healthy herself and has everything up to date and nothing is out of place as of now.

(Image is more to show her coloring and tack, not her size/height/shape or breed)

Personality

WIP

Discipline

Show-Jumping and some Cross Country

Crush

Will develop in rp or you can pm me

Mate

Same as above

Foals

Not yet, but she does wish for some

Other

She will still have the tack on at the beginning of the rp, though it will obviously get torn and messed up throughout.
