Hey yall so I have a question could anyone here be able to give me pros and cons of doing a partial lease? IÂ’m considering doing a partial lease with my boy (only because with school I donÂ’t have as much time) but IÂ’m not sure if I want to as I hate sharing my horse especially with people I donÂ’t know. ( please no negativity IÂ’m already having a hard time deciding) any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also how would you go about on deciding how much to charge leasing? (IÂ’ve never done anything like this before)

I leased out my horse when i went to school in a different state for a while.

I know its tough sharing your horse, but its generally really good for the horse to have a different person ride it every now and then. I would love to have other people ride my horses.
It's a really great opportunity for your horse to maintain fitness, and get a learning opportunity with another rider.
In order to maintain fitness, a horse needs to be ridden atleast 3x a week.

Decide on how many days you'll be leasing him. Usually, if its a half lease you would charge half of board.

Thank you IÂ’ve let maybe 3 different people ride them and it was because I was with them and I know them really well. Otherwise I have a hard time sharing him because most people around here donÂ’t listen when you tell them how your horse is and how he works. And they end up wrecking him. I had one girl work with him and afterwards he started reading while being typed and would rear while being ridden so after that IÂ’ve been extremely picky with who rides him. And the main reason IÂ’m afraid to lease him out.

Thank you for the input itÂ’s really helpful.

It´s all a question of trust.I would suggest that if you´d want to do a lease, check out the person and their way to ride/handle your horse for some time. And you can show up at the stable sometimes when they don´t expect you to be there.

I used to have a lot of parttime - leases on my horses over the past 20 years. Most of them worked really well.
Some did not take care of my tack as I wanted to, so I had to quit the lease.
And once one girl destroyed one of my horses because of her exaggerated opinion of herselfs and then did not even pay for the vet bills... so make sure to talk about all these aspects with possible leasers ;)

I agree with all of the above! I've read a lot of bad experiences with offsite leases so I'm not sure I'd do that, but at least with an onsite lease he'll still be at the same location and you can ensure he receives the care he needs. You can have a trial ride with the potential leaser to see how it goes and some people will require they take a lesson a few times per month on the horse.

I paid $250/month for a partial lease/sharing a lesson horse. I could ride 3x per week and there were certain days because I shared it with another rider. Seemed to work out well for us. I've also heard of doing half board + half of shoes/trimming/whatever farrier care is needed.

half lease instead of full lease

pros: less expensive, less of a commitment

cons: can be messy if the horse gets injured, the different riders may have different riding styles and trying to teach s horse different things can be confusing for her/him, inconsistency with riders inhibits training, emotional attachment to an animal that isn't yours
