Riding Advice - Posture? January 7, 2018 08:09 AM

Hey all,
So I've been having some real issues with posture, but only at the trot and canter. I tend to lean forwards, which doesn't unbalance me as such, but it makes my riding look messy and 'nervous', even though I'm confident at the gaits. Some tips on correcting my posture would be greatly appreciated!
Happy New Year

Id say try to think if the horse would fall from under you,you would land on your feet in the position where you wouldnt fall forward or backwards which helps you when riding if you think about it is you sit up and dont lean and then helps you stay balanced and posture looks good and helps the horse stay balanced!
Hope this helped lol
Happy new year

Being as you lean forwards,I used to have the same problem! You don't actually know that your leaning forwards until some tells you that you are,And that makes you think your siting correctly.Sitting incorrectly also can affect the horses balance.
When you ride,I advice at a walk, lean back until your stomach feels like it's being pulled slightly,Like it's being stretched.Get someone to check this on foot observing you.Practice at a walk for a but then advance. You can practice on stools, hay bales etc too.Worked for me as my first bit of posture trouble and I think it really works,
Also try to imagine a string running through your body and out your head, pulling you up straight!
Good luck and hope this helps you!

Just pull your shoulders back (doesn't look weird) and constantly think tall and straight. Helps me when I tend to lean forward, but I ride western so it might be different if you ride English.

Thankyou :) I ride a little bit of both. I prefer english, but I love western as well. I can easily keep my posture good at a walk, but when the trot and canter occurs, it's ALWAYS leaning forward xD

(I ride reining, and do a tiny, tiny bit of english on the side)
I have had the same problem. For me, what helped being told to "make sure your belt buckle is always facing up!" when doing circles, etc. Hopefully that's helpful!

What I have always been told is align your heels, hips, and shoulders. It can be slightly off, just so you can get comfortable. This is what my trainer teaches me, and she has won multiple world titles because of it. As well, think you have a million dollars under your butt (unless you're posting). This will make you sit better, improving posture (On my end, at least). :)

Leaning forward can come from a few things. Here are some of the more common reasons:

#1) Pinching at the knees. It acts as a pivot point and you tend to go forward.

#2) Saddle fit to rider. Yes a saddle should fit its rider, and a saddle that is unbalanced to the rider will also tilt them forward.

#3) A downhill horse. Nothing you can do to really fix this other than really practice sitting up straight. Unfortunately it will feel a little weird.

Pretend you have 2 $100 notes under your butt and if you lean forward you lose them. That how I learned ;)
