I do keep a HOB (hang on back) filter in my betta tank, as well as a sponge filter. However, I have a metric shit-ton of live plants that break up the water flow. And my betta seems to defy all the rules and actually likes hanging out near the outflow of the filter *glares lightly at Nalo* he also made friends with two female guppy fry I tossed in for him to snack on, so now he has friends, which I never figured would happen.

I have a 135 gallon tropical tank, a 40 gallon guppy tank that I (regretfully) neglect, and a 20 gallon tank. The 20 gallon is my betta tank and requires the absolute most work to keep it clean. The smaller the tanks, the more difficult they are to maintain, in my opinion!

Bettas are also tropical, so they require a heater. And they're very sensitive to filters with any kind of water flow, and require sponge filters instead therefore

Yes. 10% water change a week, and checking water parameters frequently

@Versa, even a betta aquarium?

I had a betta as a starter fish. With any fish, it's important to remember aquariums are a heck ton of work

Plants don’t add bacteria but they do consume some of the toxins

@Em, that's a good idea. Do the plants add bacteria too?

Beneficial bacteria can be hit or miss I’ve heard but I personally have had good results with it. If you can steal some established filter media from someone that boosts it too

If you add beneficial bacteria which you can get at pet stores it can make it faster :)

With cycling though you have to take into account a brand new fresh tank can run forever but unless something is put into the system, it will never be cycled because the beneficial bacteria doesn't have anything to feed on

@Zz, just a month is nothing. I can do that. My research says 10-12 weeks which is like 3 months!

Well if you are wanting just one, a betta is the way to go. They are super friendly and personable and very easy to care for

I second the research. Specifically research the nitrogen cycle. Running it for A week isn’t enough usually. Mine took a month

Elara started drying out some meat, humming a tune while she thought back to Sage.

Sage was content to work, occasionally nodding along to Liz's babble or reaching over to pull something out of her mouth. He did occasionally glance around though, making sure Elara was ok and any wasn't going to come into their area or anything. It was making him uneasy....she was planning something, and he didn't like it.

Elara made sure she had weapons stored all around her and in access, just in case Amy came back as she continued to dry the meat out.

Sage had enough sticks to make four decent sized boxes as well as another smaller one. All of them had lids too, and he used a bit of twine to make handles and a sort of lock so the lid would stay tightly closed. He set them to the side with a sigh then, admittedly tired.

Elara finished drying out some meat, sending off Varys to hopefully, go find Sage. The wolf loped over to Sage, hopping up onto his shoulders from behind.

Sage couldn't help but laugh when Varys hopped onto his shoulders, twisting around to greet the animal happily. "Hey bud," he chirped lightly, wrapping his arms around the wolf.

Varys wagged his tail and nudged Sage, wanting to play. He walked over to Liz and sniffed her for a moment, the girl giggling in response. "Wolfie!" She excalimed, wrapping her arms around his snout to which he sneezed in response. Elara walked out of the cabin and over to the group, laughing lightly at Liz's response as she went and sat down near them, pushing the wolf back when he got too strong.

Sage just grinned, looking around for something to throw for the wolf to play with, but stopped once he started to play with liz. He watched them, smiling as they played, trusting the wolf with her.

Elara watched the two play, tossing a glance at Sage before back at the two. "He's so gentle with her." She mused softly, watching as he bound in circles around her.

Sage hummed softly and nodded. "It's strange how animals are better with kids than some people are," he noted, thinking back to his own parents.
