If it's food for plecos then it doesn't need to be the algee wafers. But I would pick the wafers up as a once a week treat then. Also if the food you give him has wood fiber in it then you really don't need driftwood for the tank unless you want to add it and it won't cramp the fish it. I did add a little bit more information about tankmates since I had forgotten that in my first post, and you didn't mention what type of tank you had and what was in it.

I don't think it's wafers though..just a kind of pleco food

My sailfin before he died was nearly a foot and a half long, named Brusier since he didn't put up with crap from the other fish, and his best buddy was a 5 in Bristlenose named Whitey (albino, and my nephew named him) Tips I have for this type of fish: 1.) Have a hideout for him, which you seem to have. It's good sized and he'll be happy hanging out there. 2.) Diet. Start with a half and see how much he eats of it, if it's completely gone by the next morning or evening (Depending when you feed him) move up to a bigger portion of the wafer. If some of the wafter is still there by the next feeding remove it, and don't feed again the next day. This will help keep your tank water clear. Also my bristlenose would share zucchi slices with my sailfin pleco. If you give him fresh zucchi make sure it's thin slice, and only give him about a quarter of the slice. Remove it after no more than 2 or 3 hours if he doesn't eat it all. This will keep the veggie from rotting in the tank and fouling up the water. 3.) Driftwood. Get a nice piece of driftwood. You can get these a Petsmart/Petco or a LFS. Make sure to clean it with clean water a few time, dry it, and then soak it in some tank water before placing it in the tank. Plecos love to munch on driftwood. The good news is driftwood can give shelter to the pleco and provide a healthy snack at any time of day. 4.) Tanksize. These fish can do okay in a 10 gallon (I had one in my 10 gallon with a few neon tetras for about 5 years) as long as he's the only pleco, and the other fish don't bother him. However 20 gallons is prefered for the minium tank size for these fish, and again as long as he's the only pleco. I'm sure others will chip in their advice as well.

He's my first pleco ever so I'm kinda surprised he's still alive to be honest But I just got thinking "am I actually taking the necessary steps to ensure he is healthy and well?" if anyone has tips for me that will be greatly appreciated also this is him (I don't actually know if it's a boy I just say "him")

15 gallon tank with 4 decorations including his cave thing. There are 3 goldfish in with him but I am planning to upgrade the tank again so the goldfish have a separate tank to him or remove the biggest goldfish from that tank and put it in the bigger one and get it a friend. I am aware the tank is a little too small for all of them hence I said I am hoping to get a bigger tank soon. It's cleaned regularly so waste doesn't build up as I know goldfish are one of the dirtiest fish to have. Thinking I might just move all three to the bigger tank because I have 1 common and 2 comet goldfish which get along just fine with each other and they don't bother the pleco and vice versa

Okay having goldfish with him concerns me since goldfish tend to be very messy fish, grow to huge sizes (And will eat anything they can get into their mouths as well), and then the other thing goldfish are cold water fish. They don't really like water temp over 70 degrees. Plecos are a tropical fish so they need water ranges around 75 degrees to really thrive. Moving the goldfish to a bigger tank ASAP would be a good idea after cycling the new tank. If you want your pleco to have buddies then I would suggest neon tetras. You can safely have a small group of them in a 15 gallon tank with your pleco. Just make sure your water perimeters are with in the range for them since they tend to be a sensitive fish.

I got something for all of you, Let's dive in! Ah, acclimating fish, Nothing is more nerve wracking than that. What if I told you that there is a simpler way? I have heard of people using all kinds of methods, From eye-droppers, to straws. Here's what I use. Innovative Marine AccuDrip Drip Acclimation Kit. It looks a lot like an I.V. that you would get at a hospital, It can be used on: Freshwater, Saltwater,Reef and Marine and Brackish fish. It does take longer but it will help to reduce your fish's stress levels provided that you have added a StressGuard of some kind before or during the acclimation proccess, Adding a StressGuard (1 Capful) during acclimation is highly recommended since this is one of the most stressful times for your fish or fishes. You can find the Innovative Marine AccuDrip Drip Acclimation Kit on Amazon, I think it's on Ebay too though I got mine on Amazon, though I haven't taken mine out of the package because I don't need to use it right now and I really don't want it getting covered in dog hair or dust. Now when I said 'I.V.' I mean the line part of it is long like an I.V. One end hangs onto the aquarium while the other should be held or suspended with a suction cup or grip of some sort over a bucket, You will need to monitor it in case something goes wrong or the bucket in which you are using to acclimate your fish in starts to over flow, Never leave your acclimation kit unattended. Before use check for knots, kinks in the drip line and damage from wear and tear or in case it was dropped etc. That's it for now, I know this was short but I have things to do today so I can't make a huge post, I would like too but I am busy. If I get around to it I will include a picture of my acclimation kit though as I said before I'm not taking it out of the box just yet. Until next time, Byeee! |

I had no idea this thread was here. Very cool to see everyone's tanks and read all the good information on tanks and fish. This community is wonderful. I used to have a reef tank but when I sold it I took a break from fish. A year ago a friend gifted me a 5 gallon tank she no longer needed and I got a blue dwarf gourami. I eventually added some cherry red shrimp and sure enough he hassled them or ate them but I tried again and again. A few months ago I tried with some blue shrimp and not only has he left those alone but of course they have reproduced. Good thing I like blue 😉 |

Omg your Dwarf Blue Gourami is so cute! and I'm glad that he's left your shrimp alone, I guess he thought your red shrimp was the fish version of Cheetos lol |

I agree with Hastings that your blue dwarf gourami is cute. I had a fire dwarf at one time, it ate my blue shrimp, but left the cherry, ghost, and peppermint shrimp alone. And it looks like Bijoux, your tank is well planted, and everyone looks happy.

I'm so stoked on getting some hornwart and java Fern for my tank! I'm new to the goldfish world. And yeah, I've had tropical fish for years, but this 99¢ bait goldfish has consumed me financially (a 30 gallon tank for a 2" fish?) He's a rescue. But yeah, plants on the way. I hope he doesn't eat all of them! And I know he'll soon outgrow it, so my next tank will be a 75 gallon...lol Meet Frank everyone. My new nemesis that is totally spoiled. Oh, and from what I've read, the hornwort is best to left float? Any thoughts? |

I'm so jelly! I've been dying to get a goldfish for quite a few years, I just don't have the space. :( I had hornwort for quite a while in my 15g betta tank - it's an awesome floating plant. I will grow like crazy!!! I didn't originally intend to have it as a floating plant - I tried to plant it, but it always wiggled loose. I gave in lol |
