I have been stalking the other "sad mane/tail" forums, but I figured I'd make my own. - My mare has quite the wimpy tail. I just got her home, but it appears that in the past someone chewed on it. (I'll post a picture later). I also know that when she goes into heat, she loves to rub her tail. Would anyone have suggestions on a good shampoo to help her with that? She isn't a show horse, so I'm not too worried about it, but I am looking for suggestions on how to get it to grow and thicken up since the flies around here are pesky, even with a fly sheet. She has had all of the minerals she could ever need, and a good diet, so I'm not sure what else would help. Edited at May 22, 2025 04:34 PM by Mossy Lane Stables

Ground flax seed does wonders and I haven't met a horse who didn't like the flavor. It can also help with inflammation from pest bites and dry skin...Though it might take awhile to see any benefit in the dry skin department. I personally use Manely. They're pricy, but the conditioner and detangler they sell work wonders. I have a bottle of their shampoo, but haven't gotten around to trying it, yet. If you're outside of the US, I'm not sure how easy it'd be to get it, though.

A lot of people braid their tails and put them in a tail bag. That will protect the hair for the most part, and they will still be able to swat flies. Getting her to stop rubbing her tail would be a different issue...
