Absolutely haha. I'm really proud of him though- he arrived at the end of May vaguely leadable but pretty much feral and had to live in the field shelter for a week. Now he's out in the field with no headcollar 24/7 and I can lob a rug onto him while he's loose without him lifting his head

Yeah Boulder so relatable. I try to let my horse initiate touch and the things we do whenever possible. Like take the extra five minutes to let her walk up to me in the field instead of going out and getting her, pause when she turns her head away when brushing, etc. It changes the game truly and has honestly completely changed how I go about life in general, for the better. Horses have so little autonomy in our world so the little things like that we can do means so much to them. When I’m bridling a horse or anything like that I notice that they will maybe seem like they’re saying no initially by turning away or something. If you notice and respect that a lot of the time they will immediately put their nose in after, where if you had tried to chase after them it probably would escalate. That whole philosophy just means a lot to me

What he can do with horses is amazing
I was enthralled with the Road To The Horse exhibition

Haha I'll put a bit less pressure on myself then thank you. I'm hoping to get some poles before the end of the year so we can do some proprioception work because my goodness that boy doesn't know where his feet are xD Plus side is he doesn't mind things being around his legs whatsoever since he's so used to wandering into things

No lines, and no chasing. You just don't know our way and I'll leave it at that.

I wasn't a super fan of Warwick until I saw an article heading that said something like Let Your Horse Approach You
(Yes literally only read the title)
And it's made a Huge improvement in my interactions with the horses at the barn.
I can have the stall door open and have them between me at it (huge outdoor pen) and they will chose to come to me and boop my hand without any interaction besides standing still.

And I saw a video where he said don't touch the horse until they touch you and they will tell you where to touch

(Some of it feels woowoo, but it's making a difference in the relationships between the horses and I)

Yeah of course, it’s definitely a trust the process kind of exercise you have to be patient and you’ll feel like you’re not doing anything but worth it. I enjoy when training feels more collaborative with our animal friends, worth the time it takes

Haha exactly Puck! I'm hoping the more we go out the more keen he'll be to get on with it. He's a very good chap overall- and he's even happy to walk out in front of Minnie if I've got someone to lead her. He met his first tractor last night and was a 10/10 brave boy bless him

I really like Warwick Schiller’s “leading with energy” exercise for staying in the right position/responsiveness when leading, my mate was so “lazy” seeming and wanted to be directly behind me while leading, would pin her ears and swish tail when asked to go forward, it worked incredibly well

To be honest the maximum I'd ever lunge any horse is like 20 minutes, and that would be their entire work for the day. It has it's place but isn't my preferred method for anything

Yeah it'd hurt, small circles are the worst for babies. Great way to do damage to their joints. And chasing a horse on the line isnt exactly the best way to establish you're in charge 🙃

Sage sort of groaned when she clearly wasn't going to let him get out of cracking the second egg, though this time he just gave up on cracking it on the bowl and stabbed it with his finger, using his fingers to then just tear it open and flop the inside into the bowl and flopping the now desecrated shell into the sink, turning the water in to wash off his hands, flicking the water at jora playfully before drying his hands on his pants.
"Now how the hell are we supposed to get this-" he held the chunk of butter up. "-into that?" He wasn't sure how she would get a solid hunk of something into a mixture like what had been created so far, though he'd let her just show him that much. His brain had worked more than enough for this cake already. Which was, admittedly, slightly amusing.

Jora raised an eyebrow as Sage flicked water at her, though she couldn’t help but smirk at his slightly defeated expression. She shook her head, amused by how he handled the mess with only half the effort of trying to actually be neat.

"Well, Sage," she began, taking a step closer to the counter, her tone playful, "I think you’re forgetting something. The butter needs to be softened before it goes in. You can't just throw a solid block of it into the bowl like you're tossing it into a trash can."

She picked up the butter, eyeing it critically. "So, what we’re gonna do," she continued, flashing him a grin, "is slice it into smaller chunks first. Then we’ll mix it in gradually. You know, so it actually melts into the batter rather than sitting there like a lump."

She glanced at him with a teasing glint in her eye, already grabbing a knife to slice the butter. "But I guess if you want to keep it all 'impressive,' we could always just throw the whole chunk in and pray for the best."

Sage rolled his eyes at her comments about the butter, moving back towards her with a huff of air. "I told you, I know nothing about this," he whined, sliding in next to her and watching her reach for the knife, seeing what exactly she meant by softening the butter. "I've been in the kitchen once in my life, and I managed to set the cooks soup on fire," he noted with a chuckle. "I wasn't allowed back in after that. The crew always did tease me about it," he hummed softly. He would miss them all....miss the ship. But he was definitely glad he'd come here with Jora. It was a new chapter that held its own adventures. And he was ready to take them head on, even if it was just figuring out how to bake a cake.
"Wouldn't it just be easier to melt it completely and then dump it in there," he asked after a few moments of watching her cut the butter up. It would certainly take less time, though maybe it wasn't supposed to be hot when it went in. He really had no clue. He wrinkled his nose at her last comment, snorting softly. "I figured just tossing it in wouldn't work. I just didn't have any other ideas," he grumbled, though obviously not upset with her.

Jora raised an eyebrow as she glanced at Sage, an amused smirk tugging at her lips. She couldn’t help but laugh softly at the image of him setting soup on fire. "I can't say I’m surprised," she teased, cutting the butter into smaller pieces. "You’re lucky they let you back in at all after that. I imagine it took some convincing to get you past the kitchen door again."
She chuckled, imagining Sage, all hands and no finesse, probably fumbling with the simplest of kitchen tools. It was a far cry from the captain he was, the one who had somehow managed to keep them all alive through countless scrapes and storms. But here, with her, it felt different. The ship and crew were behind them now, but they had this new life to figure out, and she was just fine with that.
"Melting it completely might work, but it’d make the batter all runny," she explained, pausing to look at him. "It’s supposed to be soft enough to mix in without losing its structure, but not liquid. Trust me, you’ll want to stick to the original plan. Patience is key, after all."
She could tell by his expression he wasn’t bothered by her teasing, which made the entire moment feel easier. Being here, with Sage by her side, was different. They weren’t on the ship anymore, constantly fighting to stay afloat—now they were fighting to learn how to bake together. Jora didn’t mind the change. In fact, she was eager for it.
"Just stick with me on this," she said with a wink, "and maybe next time, you’ll be the one teaching me how to set soup on fire."

Sage chuckled softly in response to her comment, shaking his head slightly. "Well I was surprised," he noted lightly. "I'm not entirely sure what I did," he added with a slight chuckle. He wrinkled his nose after that, and nodded. "I was pretty well banned from the kitchen after that," he admitted. He didn't blame them either. Burnt soup really didn't taste good at all.
He nodded slowly as she explained the whole butter thing, understanding what she meant but still rather confused about the whole thing. "I think I'll stick to decorating things," he mused after a moment or so, moving to hop onto the counter and sit there next to her, smile lingering on his face. He just liked watching her enjoy herself really. She could chat about what she was doing and teach him all she wanted, he just enjoyed spending time with her.

Jora smiled softly at Sage's words, the familiar warmth settling in her chest. She couldn’t help but laugh at the idea of him being banned from the kitchen—though it was kind of endearing. “Well, burnt soup isn’t exactly a great way to get back in their good graces,” she teased, her voice light and playful. She glanced over at him as he hopped up onto the counter, his easy smile making her feel more relaxed.
"Decorating, huh?" She raised an eyebrow, trying not to smile too much. “I think you’re pretty good at it already. You’ve got the whole ‘making everything look effortlessly cool’ thing down.” She paused for a beat, a soft smile tugging at her lips as she focused on the task at hand. “I’m glad you’re here, though. I like having you around. You make everything more fun.”
It was true, really. She could teach him all sorts of things, but honestly, just being near him, sharing the little moments, felt like the best part of the day.

Sage hummed softly and nodded in response to her comment, a laugh coming from his lips. "It didn't taste very good after that," he admitted with a laugh. "I think the cook was the only one who genuinely did not like me," he added, tone still light. That one was fine....he wasn't a fan of the grumpy old man either. It was mutual.
Though, a light blush crossed his face when she mentioned he was good at decorating already, and he grinned over at her. "Well, I've never decorated a cake before, so I don't know how that'll go down," he mused lightly, resting his forearms on his thighs as he watched her stir the stuff together and then finish up the batter.
He moved to grab a pan and hand it to her, watching her pour it into the pan and then slide it in the oven. It was just nice to watch her doing something she enjoyed. Neither of them had much time for hobbies previously....but now they would have more time to grow them. To explore more. For now though, he was just content to watch her, his smile lingering on his face.

Jora leaned back a little, taking in Sage's words with a knowing smile. She had seen his grin when he mentioned the cook, and she couldn't help but feel a little amusement at the thought of the grumpy old man and Sage clashing. It seemed fitting somehow—two strong personalities, both a bit too stubborn for their own good. She nodded, her fingers still gently stirring the batter, appreciating his quiet presence beside her.

When he mentioned the cake decorating, Jora raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. "Oh? Never decorated a cake?" She chuckled softly, giving him a playful look. "Well, you might surprise yourself. I’m sure you have the touch for it." Her voice was light, teasing, but there was a warmth behind it. It was rare, this easy comfort between them, and it felt like something they were both still learning to savor.

As he handed her the pan, Jora took it from him with a smile, grateful for the small gesture. She couldn't help but feel a little lighter as she poured the batter in. There was something about doing this together, even in such a simple way, that made everything else feel a little less heavy. It wasn't just about the cake or the decorations. It was about this—the quiet moments, the shared space, the promise of more time to be themselves. No more rushing, no more having to push aside the things that made them happy.

When she slid the pan into the oven and glanced back at him, her smile softened. "We have time now, don’t we?" she said quietly, more to herself than to him, though the question was there, hanging between them. Time to do more than just survive. Time to live. Time to explore.

For now, though, she was content to just be.

Sage noted her amusement about the thought of her and the cook constantly fighting. "It got to the point we'd go out of our way to be as annoying as possible to each other," he hummed, tilting his head slightly as he recalled their efforts to continuously bug each other. "The crew would always call me an old man," he added with a chuckle and small shake of his head.
He shook his head with a hum when she repeated he'd never decorated a cake, shrugging after a moment. "I suppose we'll find out," he noted lightly, grinning over at her as she mentioned they had time. "The question is what are you wanting to do while we wait," he pointed out. "Standing there for half an hour doesn't seem very appealing, as pretty as you are in the sun," he added lightly.

Jora couldn't help but let out a small laugh at the mention of the constant bickering with the cook. She tilted her head slightly, imagining the two of them going out of their way to annoy each other. It was such a familiar image—one she'd seen in her own squabbles with people. "Sounds like the kind of thing that could only happen between two people who are too alike," she mused, though there was a playful glint in her eyes. "Old man, huh? That's rich coming from someone who's probably still got more energy than half the crew."
Her expression shifted as she caught the grin he shot her way. Her lips curled into a small, teasing smile at his words. "I could think of a few things to do while we wait," she responded, her tone light and mischievous. "But I suppose I should leave it up to you. You’re the one who doesn’t want to stand around." She gave him an exaggerated look of consideration, leaning slightly toward him. "Care to make this a little more interesting, old man?"
