Prepare for a bit of a rant.
So basically Qualifier shows are held on Tuesdays and if your horse is eligible they will automatically compete. They have to be entered into a Federation, be level 8 or 9 and have at least 20 Fed points.
Then if you do qualify on the 27th your horse with automatically compete

pretty common in my opinion, if you do a mass capture the likelihood is that you'll get a handful of E bravery horses

So I see people with their stable name as their avatar, but the thing is, the letters are see-through to a BG behind them. I use GIMP, 2.8 I think, and I can't figure out how to do this!! Any advise? Thanks!

I think you can put text then a BG behind it then erase part of the text, but I don't use HIMP so I'm not entirely sure... but it doesn't hurt to try :)

I put text on a BG in separate layers
Select all on the text layer
Erase it
Revert selection area
Switch to BG
Erase
