Plants don’t add bacteria but they do consume some of the toxins

@Em, that's a good idea. Do the plants add bacteria too?

Beneficial bacteria can be hit or miss I’ve heard but I personally have had good results with it. If you can steal some established filter media from someone that boosts it too

If you add beneficial bacteria which you can get at pet stores it can make it faster :)

With cycling though you have to take into account a brand new fresh tank can run forever but unless something is put into the system, it will never be cycled because the beneficial bacteria doesn't have anything to feed on

Yeah I did have issues with nitrite for months myself thinking back

@Zz, just a month is nothing. I can do that. My research says 10-12 weeks which is like 3 months!

Well if you are wanting just one, a betta is the way to go. They are super friendly and personable and very easy to care for

I second the research. Specifically research the nitrogen cycle. Running it for A week isn’t enough usually. Mine took a month

I think I am just scared of having multiple fish vs just one.

I had them breed back when I had a large angelfish tank lol of course the angels ate the eggs

I would just say overall ALWAYS do your research! Every fish needs something different such as tank size, food. etc. Also some fish don't get along with others. :) Plus what works for one person might not work for another.

Corys are cute but they theyre bottom dwelling, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have something else to hang in the middle

No they are small. You can even get pygmy ones which are really tiny
Hummingbird Meadows
09:13:28 Bird
@Angels, don't they need bigger tanks though?
Insignia Elites
09:13:25 Em
@bird yes! they scavenge the substrate for food! But watching them breed is really inserting! Mine do every so often but the eggs always get eaten. They are considered a bottom dweller :)

Yesss I love corys. I always add them to my tank because they eat leftover food that sinks to the bottom and help reduce ammonia spikes

Ok so this is a genuine question for any parents on HEE - My mom said dinner's ready and I said what are we having. She said chicken, shrimp, and salad. I said what kind of salad and she started freaking out and telling me I'm rude and not supportive. Now here's the question - Is there a reason for this?
Hummingbird Meadows
09:12:28 Bird
Corydoras sound fun too, but evidently they only stay at the bottom of the tank?

:0 how have I only just wandered upon this? I really need to look in the forums more often.

I would love some book recommendations, I'm going to go raid the library soon :] YA sci fi/ fantasy is preferable, also minimal romance would be lovely but understandably such books are rare in YA land.

Really, *anything* by Brandon Sanderson is a safe bet for sci-fi and fantasy. He's great at blending the two. Also bonus points for banter, clever dialogue, and straight up weirdness (time travelling lizards, bad metaphors, sentient chalk).
Scott Westerfeld also is a fantastic writer, there is a romantic element to some of his stuff but not in a super overwhelming way.
Maggie Stiefvater is always a favorite to recommend for the fantasy. The Raven Cycle is a good one because it's advertised to be a romance story but she gets so caught up in the world building and magic that the romance sorta falls to the wayside. It's lovely.
Six! Of! Crows!
My friend's been recommending the Locked Tomb series to me. I've been unable to obtain it yet but look up the premise- it seems very very neat.

Thanks for the reccomendations, I'll have to look into those!

Also, puck, the Locked Tomb series is indeed very very neat, the first one is one of my two favorite books. (I've been unable to decide if I like it or Six of Crows better).

I'm am writing all these down for later, I'm trying to finish the Chain if Gold books right now. Any Natasha Preston people? Shatter Me is a good one (not Natasha Preston)

Itty bitty spoiler.

if you like her romance choices, don't read past the first book.

I finally caved and started reading ACOTAR. Mostly out of curiosity, even though I strongly dislike SJM. To say the least, I felt like cartwheeling across a multi lane highway at times whilst reading this series. The sheer ridiculousness and ick of some parts of these books did make me laugh though, so I suppose that accounts for something. Sometimes you just have to read books you know you'll hate to prepare for what's waiting in hell.

Edit: no hate to anyone who enjoys ACOTAR. The first three books aren't even bad, they're just not for me. However, based of the reviews I've seen for A Court Of Silver Flames, I don't think even SJM fans can defend her butchering of this series.

I've heard ACOTAR is basically Fae erotica. Though I had not heard about the reviews on Silver Flames?

Oh yeah, it's definitely not my cup of tea. Maybe my discontempt with it is just because I don't vibe with smut, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're skim reading. The world building is good though and I'll give it to SJM, she can really write action scenes. I checked goodreads for the reviews on Silver Flames and the top three where 1 stars I believe, reading them they all rang true for what I would expect from SJM. The 1 star reviews made me laugh harder than any joke made throughout the whole series lol
