Plants don’t add bacteria but they do consume some of the toxins

@Em, that's a good idea. Do the plants add bacteria too?
ZequineZ

Beneficial bacteria can be hit or miss I’ve heard but I personally have had good results with it. If you can steal some established filter media from someone that boosts it too

If you add beneficial bacteria which you can get at pet stores it can make it faster :)

With cycling though you have to take into account a brand new fresh tank can run forever but unless something is put into the system, it will never be cycled because the beneficial bacteria doesn't have anything to feed on

Yeah I did have issues with nitrite for months myself thinking back
Hummingbird Meadows

@Zz, just a month is nothing. I can do that. My research says 10-12 weeks which is like 3 months!

Well if you are wanting just one, a betta is the way to go. They are super friendly and personable and very easy to care for

I second the research. Specifically research the nitrogen cycle. Running it for A week isn’t enough usually. Mine took a month

I think I am just scared of having multiple fish vs just one.

I had them breed back when I had a large angelfish tank lol of course the angels ate the eggs

I would just say overall ALWAYS do your research! Every fish needs something different such as tank size, food. etc. Also some fish don't get along with others. :) Plus what works for one person might not work for another.

Corys are cute but they theyre bottom dwelling, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have something else to hang in the middle

No they are small. You can even get pygmy ones which are really tiny
Hummingbird Meadows
09:13:28 Bird
@Angels, don't they need bigger tanks though?
Insignia Elites
09:13:25 Em
@bird yes! they scavenge the substrate for food! But watching them breed is really inserting! Mine do every so often but the eggs always get eaten. They are considered a bottom dweller :)

@Stardust, sounds like she has just had a long day.

Yesss I love corys. I always add them to my tank because they eat leftover food that sinks to the bottom and help reduce ammonia spikes
Star Fields

Ok so this is a genuine question for any parents on HEE - My mom said dinner's ready and I said what are we having. She said chicken, shrimp, and salad. I said what kind of salad and she started freaking out and telling me I'm rude and not supportive. Now here's the question - Is there a reason for this?
Hummingbird Meadows
09:12:28 Bird
Corydoras sound fun too, but evidently they only stay at the bottom of the tank?

VERY helpful site for diet & food help!!

Just thought I would let you know that this page is to be taken with a heavy grain of salt. The page is run by HUMAN dentist who has no degrees in any sort of nutrition (human or animal). He vaguely states he's done "professional studies in human nutrition" and is interested for canine nutrition.

He actively promotes non-evidenced based claims on his website. He's also rated foods potentially linked to DCM higher than foods following WSAVA guidelines. There is a little more but this isn't the space to write it :) Feel free to PM me for more info or research Mike Sagman (the dentist who runs a dog food review website).

I'd recommend one of the foods that follow WSAVA guidelines if possible: Hills Science Diet, Royal Canin, Purina are top three but are pretty expensive

I'm not sure about the dentist fella, but it sounds like you know a good amount, I'd like to mention though that a lot of Purina's dog food is shit
I have a list of foods that my vet (she specializes in dog and cat nutrition) that of course I can't find right now LOL :')
But as soon as I do I'll edit this with a pic :D

Personally, the only Purina I like is Pro Plan (which I do believe is WSAVA compliant or used to be) but I'm feeding BlackHawk (sometimes Meals for Mutts) and Big Dog premade raw topper as it's the best quality I can get that my dog will actually eat. She'd prefer literal shit over Hills or Royal Canin.

Above all, feed the dog in front of you and if it won't eat anything other than an average brand of kibble, feed it the average brand of kibble. Always consult your vet though.

Totally agree. Ukanuba is a saviour.

Get in the habit of taking the pup out in the morning and about an hour after he's been fed.
For overnight tho, I strongly suggest using a crate. They tend not to 'go' where they sleep. Take outside right after letting him out of it.
Ukanuba, or Iams puppy food are some of the best. We used it for our show dogs. Gave them beautiful shiny coats.
Leash training, no jumping on you and no biting you (or anyone).
Training time should always be fun, but keep lessons short. 15-20 minutes max. They can be done several times a day.
Need any more suggestions, pm me.

I read some awesome tips there! We love our crate, and so do our dogs, tbh it is the biggest lifesaver and helped so much for house trianing.
Enjoy your new puppy!!
