My suggestion is to build for about a month in the future when you can really start to get into the game. Buy a bunch of cheap (less than $1200) single-E geldings of any breed you can find (or colts and geld them), put riders on them and train them in whatever show type they are rated E in. Train weekly for about a month, then start showing them. It will take that long for you not to lose money entering them in shows. That will give you a nice income so you're not always broke. Then you can look for some nice breeding stock without breaking your bank.

What to do till then? Read. Read the game guide. Read the forums, not just help but breeding and sales as well. Get a good grip on how the game works, then decide are you mainly a showing stable? A breeding stable? Do you breed for ratings? Or color? Or both? Do you want to specialize in a breed or just collect all of them? If you want a challenge, do Knabstruppers or Sport Ponies. If you like lots of color, try Irish Sport Horses or Sport Horses. Just soak in as much info as possible, have some patience, and in a month or so you could be off and running.
