Public Breeding for Mares? May 23, 2021 11:40 AM

I hope everyone is doing well! :)
I just had a couple of questions in regards to public broods.
A) How high or low demand are mares for public brood generally? I know it depends on rating and the breed, I'm just looking for about a general consensus.
B) When putting a mare up for public brood, is there any general rule you follow when pricing the mare?
Thank you!

A. I run hundreds of public Broodmares every month. The highest demand days are the first few days of RO and then it slows down most of the month. I have public barns of WC bravery horses, EEP combo mares, EEE mares, EEW combos, PPP+ color mares and SD WC mares so pretty much something for everyone. There is no rhyme or reason to what goes first or fast but usually by the end of the month I have brooded out 500-700 of my 800 or so public broodmares.

B. I watch and see what others charge and go from there. I have set prices I use to start but quite often my prices are under cut by other people who really want their broods picked up. By the end of the month I might drop prices in a specific barn but there are certain things I don't compromise on. For instance EEE mares. At the beginning of roll over you can easily find one to breed to for 5K. A week later it might be 10k as they all get picked over. By the second half of the months the ones I have listed for 15k-25k get picked up. I am willing to wait and get my prices on some things. The last day of RO I breed the remaining mares myself and nothing goes unbred.
