We had an epic (incredibly muggy and horrid) thunderstorm here yesterday evening. Sideways rain and crazy wind. Great for the grass and my garden, but did utter a small prayer for my boy who was doubtlessly hooning around the field with his friends ><

Breeding stock question September 4, 2021 06:37 PM

How do I improve my breeding stock and decide which horses I should get rid of? I currently keep EE+ combos, but mostly EEE mares and breed to leadboard stallions, but I'm not getting much W's. I did get an EWW a couple rollovers ago, but I feel like shes weak. I have some EEE mare's that have produced quite a few PPPs. I get maybe 1-2 EEE fillies that I keep each RO and sell my EEE colts. Should I get rid of the mares that produce the PPPs and look for new stock? I'm just lost on where to go with improving my stock. I'd appreciate any advice.

I am no expert, but I would get rid of all of your PPP producing mares and look into getting broods for next RO!

If the horses you have now have sentimental value, consider keeping a couple to keep breeding if you'd like.
However if you're sure you're matching them to the best of your ability to LB boys and you're still having the same results you can do a few things. You can either limit the total number of expensive matches you do per year to pool the money for items for more promising matches with your own mares. Or you can look to purchase higher rated/better producing stock. However I find that if someone has a good horse, they're most likely not going to be selling it. You can find good horses though if a player is tryng to reduce their numbers.
The third option which I'd say try out is looking for broods. Depending on your breed there are some good broods going fairly cheap. Just keep in mind a lot of LB mare owners want items/ABLB studs used.
My personal experience used the last option. I bred myself in circles for over a year, but caught a break last March with a WW mare that has literally built my entire stable. Every LB horse I have is related to her. So sometimes making the jump to other stock is worth it!
