So, shaving him was a lot easier than taking a pair of scissors to the mats. Pup just gets a quick sanitary trim every so often since her tail often causes her to get poop on herself and I'd rather her not paint the walls and floor lmao

Im noticing my longer haired dog is coping with this heat much better than my shorter haired one. They're both wiry but Norm's is shorter and denser while Pad has more sparse but longer hair.

that can be an issue caused by shaving a double coated breed, actually. damage to the undercoat or even the top coat, more prone to matting and worse matting, or even the coat not coming back properly

but like Kuewi said, all animals are individuals

all animals are totally individual. So while one (...cat, dog, horse..) is totally fine with clipping, the next one would get problems from it. Unfortunately you can never tell before. Same applies for not getting clipped at hot temperatures

Even with frequent grooming, he had a tendency to get mats because his undercoat was basically cotton fuzz

Eh. It looks like one of those hot debate issues with cats. Personally, Niles never had any issues and I'm pretty sure he was double coated.

I don't think it's as likely as it would be for double coated dogs, but there's always the possibility

It's not good to shave double-coated

What impacts a foals rating?
Parents' ratings?
Parents' training?
Chance?

Foal's ratings come from their parents, and some chance. Tracking parent's training allows players to match a mare and stallion so one's strengths will make up for the other's weakness.
Chance, known as random factor (RF) on HEE can also play a part in a foal's ratings.

So a horse won't have a higher rated foal just because it has more training?
BUT
Training can tell you what it's strengths are?

Correct. A horse could have 12 training sessions or 50 but it won't directly make a foal better/worse based off how much training their parents have.
The more training there is however, makes it easier to tell in the long run what the sire or dam is strong/weak in.

Correct. The foals ratings are based on the parents ratings and random factor. Because a horses ratings never change, the amount of training a horse has won't change the potential ratings of foals. The training just tells you the horses strengths and weaknesses so you can properly match them. For example, if your horse is weak in heart, you want to find a match that is strong in heart.
