I’ve decided I might like to start doing some colour breeding (on a SA).

What is/are the best breeds for doing colour breeding with?
Are there any tips or things that I should know before starting?

I understand a majority of genetics and how homo and hetro work. I’m a little bit unsure on dominant and recessive stuff but that shouldn’t affect me to much. I’ve read through Kuewi’s post in the guide section which was very helpful!

The best breeds for color are ISH, SH, and PON because they can have all six patterns the game allows. All other breeds can't have appy and some breeds like KNN can only have appy.

Dominant is capital letter. Recessive is small letter. All colors/patterns/modifiers except Pearl require at least one dominant gene to be expressed. Pearl requires the horse to be prlprl AND have at least one Ccr gene. So look for capital letters. If the horse has both letters capital (homozygous dominant) in any trait except pearl all its offspring will have that trait.

So for example (using the fake Q gene) one parent has QQ and the other QQ Qq or qq every foal will have Q, but the foal might be heterozygous for it (Qq). So if you take that Qq foal and cross with Qq 3/4 of the foals will have Q. If you cross Qq with qq only 1/2 of the foals will be Q. So look for capitals or you can actually breed a plain black foal from a blue roan appaloosa sabino rabicano x a silver bay tobiano frame. It would be rare to wipe out all color by getting recessives from both parents, but it's mathematically possible.

Prlprl can show with at least one one Ccr gene ;) doesn't have to be prlprl

Prl and Ccr are the weird ones. CC is lacking creme CcrCcr is homo creme. PrlPrl is lacking pearl, and prlprl is homo pearl.

Oh I guess another weird one is At and A.. aa is lacking the agouti gene which should make a horse bay. It will only be bay if it's also Ee or EE, if it is ee it will be chestnut regardless of what "a" combo gene you have. Aa has the agouti gene and the shouted should be bay if there is an E gene. Ata is brown, once again should show if there is an E gene.

Thank you so much for all the help!
I ended up going with PON and my first goal was Homo in 4 genes.

Thanks again!

ExAx is bay
ExAtx is brown
ee with any variant of the a gene is chestnut.

Cream IS weird, in that the color name changes if it's present and changes again if it's homozygous.

Chestnut cream = palomino
Chestnut homozygous cream = cremello
Bay cream = buckskin
Bay homozygous cream = perlino
Black cream = Smoky black, but it doesn't look different because cream only affects red hair.

Silver only affects black hair, so it only shows on black and bay horses (or their variations), but not chestnut.

Flaxen is only found on chestnuts, because it only affects red manes and tails.

IRL the prl gene and the Ccr gene share a locus, but here they are separate. So a pearl horse is really Ccrprl, but here it's different to make inheritance easily handled by computer code, so I'm glad someone cleared up the confusion for me.
