Ok, So overall I need a tutorial on manes and lighting....
I use gimp and I don't have a mane brush (should I get one?)
Here are two I made. Keep in mind I don't have an art shop and I rarley make art. The credits still need to be put on, I know.
1. for a contest. I just need overall help.

Very nice overall peice, you've done well in matching stock and making the piece please T to look at. However there are a few things to work on
--> as already mentioned by gem, lighting is something this peice lacks. You need more shadows on the face, middle of the body and around the edges. This peice has quite a bright back light so you could do a jaly around the left of the horse
--> the hair lacks detail, try adding in some more shadows

--> Next time try using a. Different brush, use actual horse hair for references as everyone knows all. Hair isn't just a blob of black. I find it's best, as already said, tk use multiple different shades, there are also multiple. Hair tueorials on hee and on deviant art you can take a look at. I find it's easier to start with shadows, work on highlights and then add more. Depth and shadows.
--> you've erased a rather large chunk of the cheek. And there's also a yellow. Blob on the lip. And a ton of the original bg still on the legs. Next time. Use a sharper brush and pay more attention when cutting out the horse
--> you've got to think about where and how you place your subject. In this case the horse, on the background. The horse and background are at 2 fairly different angles. And you've also made the horse to big so it doesn't look right in the image. If the horse is running through water there would be splashes and a reflection, which there is not.
--> you've got to think about the image itself and think about every single part of it, what is the horse looking at where is it even coming from. Think about this next time.
--> blurring the background also helps keep focus on the horse

Would anybody be interested in horse edits like these? I am not currently able to change original markings or hair color, but can add brands and change the body color to something realistic. What should I price my work if I even decide to sell and does anybody have any tips or anything on changing hair and markings? Thanks!

For tangle
you actually need to get the piece out fully, there’s very clearly a ton of original bg left on the horse
the appaloosa is very bright considering where it is,don’t do it as bright next time.
kn the topic of lighting most of the horse would be a lot darker, covered in shadows for the most part, however the back of the horse, and most of the edge would be a bit orange/goody colour
since the lighting is quite stringer I think you could do a gold halo around the ack of the horse to show how strong the lighting is

I think the pattern and the halter removal look very nice. I would recommend taking a look at cutting and lighting. Try taking a very small eraser and getting as close as you can to the body's of the horse so there is none of the original background left. Second, try creating a new layer, taking a large black airbrush, and creating a big gradient shadow over the horse's legs and underbelly. Add some shadows to most of visible parts of the horse because your light source (the sun) is behind the horse.

For solid color:Grey scale the whole horse them lasso the markings and make them the same shade as the body, then play with lightness hue and saturation to get the wanted color.
For markings:do the above step up to making the whole greyscale the same shade, then lasso the shape of the markings, and make them white
Hair:greyscale it but you may also want to mess with contrast after you've changed hue saturation and lightness
