So instead of studying for this damn test I'm on horse eden which is problem #1 😅. That and the fact that I scrolled on insta for hours and woke up at noon. Oh and then did some work on manips for funsies cause like, I CLEARLY have time for that, don't you know?
.
Does anyone have any study tips, advice, etc? This is going to be focusing on IR, NMR, and Sn1 and Sn2 reactions, but I believe we're also doing chirality, stereoisomers, and other stuff within that domain (Stereochemistry, which is the stuff I forget since it was a month ago 🥲).
.
What I'm doing:
Taking notes on the lecture slides to get the ideas and rules in my brain, we've gone over this so this is review/relearning (thank god for good slides paired with the scribbled notes I did in the margins)
Once I finish that, I'll redo the weekly homeworks we've done, then the midterms, and hopefully I'll be set 🤞
.
I'm not finding it too hard, but it's a LOT of content and I have two days to learn it (as I do take notes in class but I literally don't do anything else to remember what is taught lol). I got a 79 on the first one which is perfectly reasonable with my study habits LMAO, and I'd like to hit similar/above that this time.
Since I go to class and have homework due every week and a lab every two weeks, at least I've been kinda "forced" to study and learn (though I've been skipping my homework because I'm too busy with other classes...)

Also in ochem right now!
Organic chemistry tutor is a great resource. Explains things like you're five, gives a good mix of opportunities to participate and explain the answers, rather than just showing you. A great walkthrough.
Depending on the textbook, or availability, a great resource. I oftentimes will go ahead and go to class and then read the textbook afterwards so I have a basic understanding before delving into the specifics of a textbook. Textbook will usually have more in depth info, but can provide more context into the why and how instead of "this is just how it is"

Organic chemistry tutor has been saving my life (and grades) since high school 🤣
.
I originally tried to read the readings before class like it was suggested, but I'm honestly just way too busy with my other courses. I just transferred to a more difficult uni and jumped headfirst into it with a full course load. It would probably be fine most times, but as someone with TERRIBLE time management skills and a super bad procrastinator, I'm hardly getting things done in time.

Lol i also have an organics test coming up soon! (4 days....) End of year exam for me though. I always do past papers and watch recordings or tutorials on youtube at the same time, but honestly it doesn't work for me that well lol.
  • If you're memorising reaction schemes, I like flashcards. It's simple, but my brain likes them a lot for memorising conditions, reactants and products.
  • If your prof records lectures, watch those. 2x speed (or lower if the brain can't handle it that fast), while you do some other form of studying. If they don't, try looking up some tutorials on yt and find some you like. (i think there's a channel called "the organic chemistry tutor")
  • If there are past papers, it's always a good option lol
at the end of the day, for me it's all about just sitting down and applying yourself. i like to remove distractions (phone powered off, no HEE tabs open, art programs/video games turned off on my laptop) and then maybe listen to some music while i'm studying.

i'm still in highschool so luckily my organics is boundlessly easier than yours lol. some of this may not apply to your personal learning style but i hope my imput is helpful!

Not in Ochem, but in a different chem class xD and honestly in the exact same situation lol, all i can say really is sometimes just getting out of my 'usual' study environment and into something less familiar, often with bright lights and just not conducive to getting comfy and doing art or scrolling, helps me immensely! If you know a nearby library or quiet space like that, i highly recommend it!
-
But oh my gosh i feel the procrastination pain, it really can be drowning sometimes lol, you've got this though! and good luck on your midterm!

Got me through Langauge Arts and Science this last week. You can give it your notes or materials and it makes a study guide, practice tests and tests. Also designs flash cards. It is free but I have my suspicions that it will go up soonish.
I also suggest studying when your brain is more awake, whether that be 2am or 1pm
