Healing Piercing Bumps? June 11, 2026 02:06 PM

I had my third lobes pierced 4 months ago (with a needle) - the piercer did an excellent job and my lobes were healing nicely until about a month ago. I took them out about (a litttle early, but one popped out accidentally and I figured I may as well just take both of them out to clean them lol). However, over the last month or so, I've noticed a piercing bump forming in the left lobe. The right lobe is still healing beautifully and there's no sign of a bump/infection. There's no pain in the left ear at all either but the right ear is painful.
I've been doing all the things that Google/past general piercing experiences thas told me to do, such as cleaning with saline solution, keeping the area dry, sleeping more on the opposite side, not touching the earring etc. The bump just seems to be getting bigger though.
-
I've never had such a stubborn and large piercing bump before so I'm concerned as to why it doesn't seem to be getting better but worse. I'm sure it will clear up eventually but I'm impatient lol. I was wondering if anyone has had stubborn piercing bump experiences before and if there are any magic tricks I should know besides what Google reccommends in order for the bump to heal quicker?
-
Just to clarify, this is definitely not a keloid.
Also, no I am not going to go get it checked by a piercer because I don't think it's really a huge concern - just an irritatation at this point that I want gone x)

I got first and second lobes done at the same time. Got a bump on a second lobe before downsizing. Took earrings out for a day and put my original post back in, left it alone, and it healed. No special cleaning, etc. Also, the first lobe on the same side was a little infected so left that to drain with the larger post in the meantime. Other side was perfectly fine. Main thing is to make sure nothing is touching it/too tight. Give it room.

These helped me a TOOONNNN. I heal piercings VERY hard. And all my jewlery has to be titanium for new piercings. I got piercing bumps pretty bad on my nose, these helped a lot.

Thank you for these, I'll definitely look into getting them! I haven't bought any special solutions yet lol as I'm suspicious of what to trust and what actually works so it's definitely good to get opinions from someone who has used them :)
I'm hoping to get my nose pierced next year so probably good to have something for it then, too.

I totally agree with Jericho! I had my conch and helix pierced and my helix was a hard to heal and got bumps because I kept sleeping on it - and I used a mineral oil mix like the one linked and saline spray. Best of luck!

Gosh, first and second at the same time sounds rough in terms of healing >.>
I will definitely pay special attention to giving it as much room as possible. I switched from the butterfly backs that I was pierced with to some silicone stoppers and that have helped enormously in terms of healing my right lobe, so I'm hoping that a gentle back with less pressure will help too :)
Thank you enormously for the advice!

It's great to know these things work, thank you!
One of my friends wants to do her helix later this year, so at least I can also recommend stuff that works to her to help the healing process ;D

I've had a fun history with piercings lol.
Couple things I'd reccomend, if they were done with a gun I would just take them out entirely, wait a couple months and get them re-pierced with needles.
there is no piercing more prone to irritation, infections and such than those done with a gun especially as they are typically done with low quality jewelry. Maybe request titanium jewelry too. Personally, I've given up trying to heal anything done with a gun... hate it so much. In saying that many people have more will and patience than I do to heal piercings, I must admit 😅.

Although, if you've never had issues prior to getting your 3rds then maybe the aftercare sprays could do the job fine. I would still recommend trying titanium jewelry though, if you can. I think they're a bit pricey though, definitely worth it in my opinion.
Some piercings are just funny too. Like a few years back I had non-stop issues with a nose stud, did everything right and it refused to work with me till I did the one thing highly recommended you don't do, tried healing it with a ring rather than stud. Literally never had an issue with it after that 😭
Also: I feel you, I'm currently trying to heal my nose, and a helix, plus a Tragus that I only recently realized wasn't closed up, which strangely hurts more than I expected, I suppose having to slightly stretch it is quite irritating.

Funnily enough they were done with a needle and I have titanium studs, I think it's just a very stubborn piercing 🙈 I also do not like the gun - I got my first lobes done when I was like 11? with a gun and they healed fine, but one has always been a little wonky. So absolutely stciking with needles and a reputable piercer as well, which I think I have found.
Tragus sounds painful, props to you because cartilage piercings are brave! And that is very interesting about the nose - how painful/irritating was the healing process? I am also not the most patient lol but I really want to get mine done next year after thinking about doing it for the past year or so.

Had them done in November and having never been pierced anywhere, it really wasn't that bad lol. Mine were done with needles too. I also had flatbacks, not the screw ones though. Left them in 24/7 and took about a month to completely heal after upsizing that side.
