It's been a hell of a year. First my pony, who I let the lesson program use in exchange for his board, pulled up lame. The first vet call couldn't find anything, so we injected him with a steroid so swelling could go down and then re-visited later that week (so already right there is several hundred dollars) to diagnose him with a flexor manica tear.

Several months of stall rest, several months of rehab, before he can go back into the lesson program. So I'm paying not only his rehab, but his board, which doubled my costs and threw a wrench in my plan as I'd been planning on breeding my mare this year.

Then my other mare started acting odd, and we had to hire a different (more expensive) dentist to float her, as the other one hadn't done a great job. More money I did not anticipate spending.

And then she outgrew my saddle. Had to sell that, yay, at a loss, and then make a down payment on a custom saddle. It took months to recover from the cost of the first set of vet bills for me to save up that money AND have enough set aside to pay the breeding fees because fuck it, if I don't breed now it'll be another set of emergencies keeping me from doing it.

So finally, money is sorted. I take my mare down to Ocala to be bred. I pick her up Saturday, they said they'll bill me sometime this week, I said okay great thank you, and then....

Sunday, my cat was not okay.

As in, presenting neurological symptoms. So I rush him off to an emergency vet and spend $1400 and 4 hours only to be told that he has a 'fever'. They give him some painkillers, perk him right up, and send him home. I'm very unhapy. Monday, he's worse, and paralyzed in his hind end, so I run off to a different emergency vet and they diagnose him with vestibular disease. It took them half an hour and $250 to do it, so I'm furious at the first vet for A) missing that and B) charging so goddamn much.

I mean, I'll pay it a thousand times over. I don't have the money. But I'd find a way.

Then I get the bill from the breeding place today. $1400. Sorry, I just spent that money at the other vet. Can I do a payment plan? They're okay with it, thank goodness, I'm emailing the receptionist, then my regular equine vet emails me with ANOTHER invoice because I have five horses because I do not make good life decisions.

Deep breath. Everything will be fine.

Then I get a call from the mechanic, because my truck is there for an $50 oil change. Did I know I needed my brakes replaced? And there's a coolant leak? That'll be a thousand dollars, thank you.

Don't get me wrong. I'm grateful. I'm so grateful that my animals are all safe and healthy now. I'm grateful that my vets and the reproductive clinic and the mechanic are happy and understanding to take a payment plan from me for a while.

But I guess today was the final straw. My truck doing me like that just felt a little personal.

It's fine. Most of this is self-inflicted, as anybody who gets into animals will say. Everything will be fine. But I wish being fine wasn't so expensive. 😂😭

AND THEN THE YEAR CONTINUED.
Saturday, my pregnant mare began colicking. We called the vet out immediately and she came and checked her over. We sedated her to keep her comfortable (and so she wouldn't kick the vet in the face while working on her), and usually when horses come out of sedation while colicking, they're either more comfortable, which is a good sign and means it's passing, or it's a bad sign and means it's getting worse.
Mare came out of sedation worse. I've never had to make the call for my own personal horses before, but I've shipped enough horses that it was easy to make the decision. Hooked up my trailer, threw her on, and off we went to the hospital.
Luckily the drive went smoothly and they were able to take her in immediately and let us back to watch as they checked her out. She had a displacement, which sometimes can sort itself out and can sometimes require surgery. What are our options?
Surgery could cost upward of $8k. I had $1800 in my bank account.
I said screw it, I'll find the money somehow, but I couldn't live with myself if I lost this mare because of money. So I gave the vet full authorization to do whatever was best for her and drove home.
On the way back, my truck started rattling. Bad. Like space shuttle re-entering the atmosphere level of rattling. Fucking fantastic. We got to a gas station and one of my trailer tires also looked a little bit low, but I kicked it and it seemed like it would be fine for the hour left we had to get home.
We get home, I pull my trailer around, deciding to unhitch it in the morning when I was less exhausted, and... the goddamn tire exploded. Less than a year and a half old, I got all new tires May of 2024, and the tire just. Completely popped.
So that's going to cost more money. Yeefuckinghaw.
Today I was determined something would go right. Got news that my mare is doing better and should be able to come home Wednesday (hopefully on my trailer, because I don't have money for a shipper, but I also haven't had a call back from the tire guy yet), and I decided to give my pony one last ride today before he re enters the lesson program on Wednesday and finally gets back off my bill.
He tripped. We trotted for two minutes and he tripped. And now it looks like he's reinjured the leg that took him out of the program from January-August.
I give up a little bit. I've had horses for over a decade and never have I had so many injuries and vet bills and expenses in the span of a year. If he's really out for the next year again, I don't know what I'll do. I'm already trying to sell the other pony sooner than I planned to get him off my bill. I'm also hoping to get Cliff leased out to help with finances, but he's difficult to get along with so finding a rider for him is tricky.
It's just been. A long fucking year. I'm so grateful my horses and cat are still alive, despite their best efforts not to be, but I really wish things would get easier for a little while. The financial and emotional toll of this is starting to really hit.
