Hey there,
I was wondering if anyone had the same problem and has found solutions? Horse has been in high heat lately (taken in during intense heat), and sweats quite a lot, with the fly mask and muzzle on. This has resulted in hair rubbing off on his face.

My mare has had quite a few rubs on her face this year due to her bridle, and my old boy used to get similar rubs, I found that the best thing to heal them is Sudocrem,
which you can definitely find in the UK, I'm not sure about US and internationally, but I assume it's global...
and in terms of preventing them, with the bridles I would take off nosebands until they healed and checked everything fit properly. In terms of fly masks can you buy any with the fleece lining on the inside to prevent rubbing? I'm not too sure on muzzles as I don't use them on my horses :)
I hope this helps a bit

The rubs are more around the inner parts of the fly mask, not the edges, so I'm not sure if fleece lined would improve this unfortunately. I've gotten fleece for the nose portion of the muzzle, but hair is starting to come of near the cheek bones where horse sweats most. The cream sounds like a good solution until I can adress how to prevent the cause! Thank you for the response, this is very helpful! :)

For rubs or galls on areas that will have tack rubbing, I like Bickmore's. You can put it on pretty much any wound and it works great as a protector and lubricant to keep any more damage from happening.
If it's gnats bothering them (that's why mine rub), I've found that a coat of Vaseline for a few days deters them.

It might be fungus caused by the sweat. Most of our chestnuts get this, I have fungasol (Corona brand) that I just smear into their faces.
If the fly masks are rubbing them, try a different brand. I wouldn't go with fleece because that just soaks up sweat and makes it worse.

I don't have any suggestions for stopping the rubs, but my mare has horrible allergies in the summer that cause her to rub her face open. The only thing besides dex that helps is scrubbing with iodine. I also spray banixx on it after it's been washed and scrubbed. I've also had success with shapely's mtg on another horse who excesssivly itched her stomach.

I should add that my mare who rubs her face open often gets flare ups from sweat sitting on her skin.

Hi,
I have a horse in my care that is having a similar Facial Hair Loss problem.
- He does not have a Fly Mask on
- We are in a Hot Climate with Monsoons coming in
- He is groomed daily, his face washed daily
PXL-20240702-021227027.jpg PXL-20240702-021243994.jpg

Also having a problem with another horse's tail.
- I meticulously care for his tail... and he rubs it out every summer.
- I have tried just about everything on it
- No Worms
- It's like the Hair Root is weak or not deep
- It's only the top part of the tail

That looks like gnat allergies. Talk to your vet about medicated shampoo, you give them a bath with it and let them sit for ten minutes before hosing it off. Also if possible have him in under a fan when the gnats are out.
