It works with almost any chicken breed. You hold them by their sides, then tilt them forward (head towards the ground) and a hen should fan out and lift her tail feathers whereas a rooster won't move them

I'm not super experienced, but for an EWW I think 4/6 up week 4 can be decent. It depends on how she trains later though. Week 5 she should ideally be up in all of them

It is a leghorn, so it is a bit different than others. I have a friend who is going to help me determine. Something about the saddle feathers.

Do you know the flip trick that will tell you 90% sure if it is a hen or rooster?

Sage, that last mare you linked is on her week 4, so it should be no problem to track her training if you start now :)

I am suspicious that one of my pullets (female) is actually a cockerel (male)

If so I guess that one is going to freezer camp

Sage,
The most important thing when trying to breed well is going to tracking training, that allows you match efficiently and better, unfortunatly because you haven't been it's muc more difficult.

Maybe breed specific LBs if the mare is not as great and the lower ABLB boys don't match her

It's so incredibly hard to find a good farrier which sucks because good feet on a horse is everything.

I have had the same farrier for two years now, and at first he was great. My horse's feet look great, and all was fine.

Lately however my farriers quality has gone down. He has trimmed my OTTBs back feet so incredibly short that my vet was concerned, and he destroyed the feet of another horse for my trainers client. I have been looking for another farrier, but in my area there is a small pool and most of them don't show up for their appointments.

People just don't want to put in the work anymore, and it's frustrating.

Yikes... I started doing my own farrier work 12+ years ago for that very reason. I read lots of books, some being the ones you would read if you got the certificate. I don't trim other horses since I'm not a professional, but I'm the go-to on trail rides when someone gets a crack or needs a touch-up. My horse chiropractor is also an equine vet and she compliments my horse's hooves every time and asks for my farrier's info and then I remind her it's me =P I think she has the same problem you are having.

I couldn't tell you why farriers start to decline other than their age and physical health. It would make sense. I am incredibly sore after doing my two horses and the second horse usually has a slightly worse trim because I wear out in 90 degree temps.

I'm not sure where you can look for a different trimmer. I used to have a certified barefoot trimmer come from another state and split the travel fee with other horse people in the area.

Maybe check out "the horses hoof" site for trimmers in your area. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post directl links on here.
