And I've got some pony sized reflective leg wraps on their way for him too- I was hoping he'd get away with wearing Minnie's but he ended up wearing them as anklets xD

Is there a easy way to see where your fed horses are ranking at the moment?

Haha that's alright! I do have a cavesson that fits him actually so could give it a go. My poor mother will be getting her steps in to help me get him going haha

Yeah, lunge cavesson with reins on two of the noseband rings, I’ll see if I have a pic

Yes please Red!

Oh that's another one actually- do any of you long-rein without a bit in, and if so what tack do you put on? Ted's got a year without a bit as I'll not know if his wolf teeth have fallen out until his next dentist check (and then he'll have them removed if they haven't) but I'd like to get him longreining before then to help his confidence

It ultimately is luck but using maps and capturing on capture day helps a lot. I am kind of a capture addict lol if you just keep going you will lose a lot of money but eventually you might get something good lol

I can pm you some book and video recommendations! Have done a lot of clicker training and really recommend it. It is so motivating and fun for them (and us hehe)

I'll definitely give it a look Red- do you have any you'd reccommend? I really want to get him started with as nice an experience as possible so everything helps!

Yeah Acacia you definitely can get Ws from the wild!

Min if you are open to it you should look up some demos for how clicker trainers teach good manners. He could definitely figure out expectations around food. It’s like if you’re bad at math you need to practice math problems. If he’s bad with food around you need to practice with him and food

How are you guys capturing W's in the wild?
Minerva

Thankfully Ted figured out FAST that I was a provider of food. It's unfortunate that we've had to annex treats because that would get him doing pretty much anything, but unfortunately he bites like a bastard when theres even the hint of them being around. He'll be a cracking horse when he's all grown up though- even as a gangly baby he's eyecatching

Oh thats so good! My guy isnt quite "lob a blanket on" level yet but its so rewarding watching how confident they can become
Minerva

Absolutely haha. I'm really proud of him though- he arrived at the end of May vaguely leadable but pretty much feral and had to live in the field shelter for a week. Now he's out in the field with no headcollar 24/7 and I can lob a rug onto him while he's loose without him lifting his head

Alright, my friends. Some of you may know bits and pieces of this story.
.
Over the summer, I fell off a two story deck I was building (I'm a part time missionary) and I broke both ankles. Prior to that, I was dealing with some personal issues which prevented me from getting to the barn save for actually showing when my trainers needed me to sit on something or I had made a commitment to an owner. Flash forward to mid-autumn and I re-sprained an ankle playing football, which has caused me to rest through this show season, which in five shows on a touch-and-go basis with one very kind, patient trainer and very very kind mounts as caused me to well exceed point requirements and double qualify for post-season showing despite maybe riding twelve times this year. Our regionals is in three weeks, and, while I'm 75% better, walking fine, etc, I know that only getting to the barn to train sometimes won't get me back to nationals, and neither will pushing myself. What kind of basic, non-difficult, non-lower-body-strenuous exercises do you guys do to strengthen your muscles for riding?

I know yoga balls help a lot, just for muscle memory, build-up and improving riding position. Yoga in general would probably be good, and you can probably find some really great exercises on the web

I can second yoga! Strength is great for riding but if I had to choose between that and balance, balance wins every time.
Also situps/pushups are great. Pushups can be hard on your ankles, but even push ups when you're on your knees are better than no pushups at all. Lots of core work. I also like squats, they're great for your legs, but that can be hard on your ankles. (I have ankle problems so I get where you're coming from!)

Go to the gym and get help from a professional. Or a doctor.

I have a Physical Therapist, and she has given me ankle strengthening exercises, but I figured I'd check in with horse people too to see if y'all had any go-to exercises :) Doesn't hurt to have more information from different sources rather than less :)

My suggestion still stands. Yoga is relatively tame for the body and really helpful

Might sound silly, but focusing well on your walking and standing posture. A lot of times after an injury people tend to walk and stand differently whether they're aware of it or not. Spend some good time focusing on if you're walking and standing the right way to use the correct muscles. Most important thing I learned after injuries.

I had surgery on my ankle and foot 2 years ago and found that swimming was a great way to keep in shape while I was still restricted on weight-bearing activities. I also suggest some sort of flexable ankle brace ( I use Back on track) just for support and it has helped me stay comfortable while riding.
