I do keep a HOB (hang on back) filter in my betta tank, as well as a sponge filter. However, I have a metric shit-ton of live plants that break up the water flow. And my betta seems to defy all the rules and actually likes hanging out near the outflow of the filter *glares lightly at Nalo* he also made friends with two female guppy fry I tossed in for him to snack on, so now he has friends, which I never figured would happen.

I have a 135 gallon tropical tank, a 40 gallon guppy tank that I (regretfully) neglect, and a 20 gallon tank. The 20 gallon is my betta tank and requires the absolute most work to keep it clean. The smaller the tanks, the more difficult they are to maintain, in my opinion!

Bettas are also tropical, so they require a heater. And they're very sensitive to filters with any kind of water flow, and require sponge filters instead therefore

Yes. 10% water change a week, and checking water parameters frequently

@Versa, even a betta aquarium?

I had a betta as a starter fish. With any fish, it's important to remember aquariums are a heck ton of work

Plants don’t add bacteria but they do consume some of the toxins
Hummingbird Meadows

@Em, that's a good idea. Do the plants add bacteria too?
ZequineZ
09:19:24 ZEZ - ZZ
Beneficial bacteria can be hit or miss I’ve heard but I personally have had good results with it. If you can steal some established filter media from someone that boosts it too

If you add beneficial bacteria which you can get at pet stores it can make it faster :)

With cycling though you have to take into account a brand new fresh tank can run forever but unless something is put into the system, it will never be cycled because the beneficial bacteria doesn't have anything to feed on

Yeah I did have issues with nitrite for months myself thinking back

@Zz, just a month is nothing. I can do that. My research says 10-12 weeks which is like 3 months!

Well if you are wanting just one, a betta is the way to go. They are super friendly and personable and very easy to care for

I second the research. Specifically research the nitrogen cycle. Running it for A week isn’t enough usually. Mine took a month

My guppy breeding program is finally taking off! I finally got a small spade in one of my female frys tails, as well as another beginning to develop a 'holographic/shimmer' to her tail in a pattern I've been working towards.

Nice. Sounds like your guppies are going to be knock outs.

Uhm so I'm new to plants and I now have a couple plants I don't even know what kinds to be honest 😅
But one of them seems to be growing another plant off its leaf tips? Can anyone help me explain this

I think it's an Amazon Sword plant as well, and it looks pretty healthy too, at least from what I can see.

I have some big big news.
I said I would never do betta's again buut I did something I shouldn't have XD I opened Google Images and literally typed in 'Avatar Betta Fish' Well..now that I have seen them I want one, I'm getting another betta fish, He will be going in my 20 gallon tank after it has cycled, I'm going to be using live plants so it should be a pretty exciting time, after he settles in, I will be posting pictures of him, I'm hoping for a Halfmoon Avatar Betta I like my Halfmoons.

Gahhhh this fish is beautiful!!! Why must you put ideas in my head? ;o;

Hey, so I've been breeding guppies for a while and I've had constant problems with them. Every time I get a new batch of babies or go to sell them they get sick or start dying. Water quality,temperature,filtration,food and space are all fine. These are ones I've bred myself and I make sure to regularly add new genetics in every once and a while. So I'm thinking of maybe switching species because these guppies are giving me so much grief. What do you all prefer, Platies or ballon mollies?.

How old are your guppies when you try and sell them? I think I know what might be happening.
