Plants don’t add bacteria but they do consume some of the toxins

@Em, that's a good idea. Do the plants add bacteria too?
ZequineZ

Beneficial bacteria can be hit or miss I’ve heard but I personally have had good results with it. If you can steal some established filter media from someone that boosts it too

If you add beneficial bacteria which you can get at pet stores it can make it faster :)

With cycling though you have to take into account a brand new fresh tank can run forever but unless something is put into the system, it will never be cycled because the beneficial bacteria doesn't have anything to feed on

Yeah I did have issues with nitrite for months myself thinking back

@Zz, just a month is nothing. I can do that. My research says 10-12 weeks which is like 3 months!

Well if you are wanting just one, a betta is the way to go. They are super friendly and personable and very easy to care for

I second the research. Specifically research the nitrogen cycle. Running it for A week isn’t enough usually. Mine took a month

I think I am just scared of having multiple fish vs just one.

I had them breed back when I had a large angelfish tank lol of course the angels ate the eggs

I would just say overall ALWAYS do your research! Every fish needs something different such as tank size, food. etc. Also some fish don't get along with others. :) Plus what works for one person might not work for another.

Corys are cute but they theyre bottom dwelling, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have something else to hang in the middle

No they are small. You can even get pygmy ones which are really tiny
Hummingbird Meadows
09:13:28 Bird
@Angels, don't they need bigger tanks though?
Insignia Elites
09:13:25 Em
@bird yes! they scavenge the substrate for food! But watching them breed is really inserting! Mine do every so often but the eggs always get eaten. They are considered a bottom dweller :)

Thanks for the advice Hasteings!
i am struggling in controling the population of drain flies that sometiems breed in my fish tank and i gets really annoying to see little tan and brown worms wriggling above the waterline. i usually clean them off 1-2 times a day and sometimes the Serepae tetras try and eat them if they fall in.

I had a Mystery Snail tank set up years ago, and I kind of miss it. It had colored glass shrimp in it too and they would hitch rides on their shells, lol.

We had glo fish and they all died within two days :( I don't think I let their tank sit long enough. Makes me sad that I did that to them.

Glo fish should be out of the hobby. They are a manmade fish. Dye is injected into the fish to make them have that glow appearance. Any dyed fish tend to lead short lives from what I've seen of them.

That's right, I wish they hadn't been made in the first place.

Where have I been?
Wow I ask that question a lot.
My grandmother has been sick and is back in the hospital, so I took an unplanned break from HEE, I don't know when I will be back 100% but please don't think that this thread has keeled over and died.

I have a 4 gallon fresh water tank, (I know, its tiny but i dont have a lot of space.) I keept guppies for a while and then got a betta. I love bettas. she was a buttiful blue one. I will try and get some photos. my tank has no lid and has a waterfall rock thing on front. the filter pumps water up. because I have no lid the tank is freezing and needs 3 heaters for a 4 gallon tank.

Hi all!
My name is Kirsten, I am 19 years old
I currently have 4 tanks running
50 gallon- 5 grandad goodies, beauties really
20 gallon- small community planted with a variety of fish.
10 gallon, another small variety
5 gallon- planted betta tank!
The 20 gallon is a soon to be saltwater tank, transferring plants over to my 5 gallon, and the other fish into my mom's 10 gallon tank. Then me and my boyfriend are starting a few saltwater tanks as well!

They are now bred to glow, ethical places no longer inject, there are clear differences now between injected and genetically bred glow fish!
