Should I stick to showing 1 discipline or 2 or all 3? I'm only doing SD but like should I have 400 Dressage horses or many 200 D and 200 J? Or should i divide it pretty even?

I don't know much about any of this stuff because I haven't been through college yet. But are you talking about riding outside of school or joining the college's equestrian team,

Oh, that's cool, Thunder! Would be so nice to keep up with how college is for both of us. Have fun on the IHSA team, it sounds nice lol xD

I'm talking about riding outside of school since my college doesn't have a riding team.

I was on our equestrian team and we showed IHSA. IHSA is...different. This was quite a few years ago so it could very well be better now but I'll be honest I didn't love their showing format, and became a non-showing member of the team after a few semesters. I liked my teammates very much but I ultimately decided to stick with lessons in a proper lesson stable (our coach just had a handful of not very well trained horses at their residence and you had to pay $$$$ to take a "lesson" on them during show weeks). IHSA lessons/shows aren't cheap and in a circumstance like my school had I just don't think you get your money's worth.

ETA - I just realized you said your school doesn't have a team, but I'll leave this in case it is helpful to someone else.

Used books for sure. I used to get mine from the now defunct Half website. Try eBay and the like, you can save hundreds not going to your school's book store.

I also worked a few part time jobs to be able to afford it all, I was pretty close to full time all hours combined.

Ooh, news! Like I said earlier, riding wasn't one of the criteria while I was actually looking at and accepting colleges, so I hadn't really looked at that and since it wasn't listed in the sports for the college I'm going to, I thought they didn't.
I was looking through their full clubs/activities list and apparently they do have an IHSA team, for hunt seat and for dressage (I don't know if you can do both, but it's cool because those are the two disciplines I ride). So, definitely more excited, though time and money is still an issue, as well as transportation since my college doesn't have a barn and they use a barn almost 15 miles away.

That's great news Ginger!
You'll probably be able to find out more about time and money by contacting the team. In my case, it works out to $930 plus attire per semester, which I will probably cover with a job. My college also uses an off-campus barn that is about a 30min drive from campus, but the college provides transportation. Your college may do the same.
