Gale’s eyes darted around, but the forest remained still. No more movement. No more voice. “You know what?” Gale muttered, his frustration rising. “I’m not wasting my time again. C’mon, Varys.” He turned sharply and began walking down the path, his boots crunching against the leaves. Varys hesitated for a moment, his eyes still scanning the trees, but then he followed, his large paws making soft thuds on the ground. As they walked, Varys let out a low, frustrated growl, his hackles still raised, clearly unsettled by the voice that had taunted them from the shadows. Every now and then, he would glance over his shoulder, growling softly as though still irritated by the lingering presence. Gale didn’t stop or look back. He’d dealt with enough. He was done letting the past chase him. “Forget it,” Gale muttered to himself. “We’ve got better things to do.” Varys grumbled one last time, as if in agreement, before he trotted at Gale’s side, still watchful, still on edge. |

Just as Gale took another step forward, the voice called out again, sharper this time. “Gale, wait!” He froze, his hand instinctively going to the dagger at his side. Varys growled low, his stance still defensive as he turned his head toward the source of the voice, clearly unwilling to let his guard down. Gale’s jaw clenched, and he exhaled sharply. His frustration bubbled to the surface. “You’re wasting your breath,” Gale said, his voice cold and firm, not bothering to turn around. “I’m done.” Varys grumbled, still uneasy, but he didn’t stop following. Gale, for his part, kept walking without looking back. “Stay in the past if you want,” he muttered under his breath. “But I’m moving forward.” |

Gale didn’t break stride. He kept walking, his boots crunching softly on the forest floor. Varys, sensing the tension, immediately stepped between them, his massive frame a silent barrier. His eyes locked onto Kayla, his growls low and menacing, ready to act at any moment. Gale’s voice came, calm but cold, without turning around. “True,” he said. “Varys will though.” He continued walking, the words hanging in the air, his steps steady as Varys kept pace, still watching Kayla intently. The wolf’s growls slowly faded as they moved further, but Gale’s message was clear—if it came to it, Varys would do what was necessary. |

The wolf’s stance shifted, eyes narrowing at Kayla as he took a step forward, ready to charge. With a flash of movement, he darted toward her, his massive frame a blur in the dim light of the forest. But before Varys could close the distance, Gale spun around in a blur of motion, his hand grabbing the wolf by the scruff of the neck. With a firm grip, he yanked Varys back, forcing him to halt in his tracks. “Enough, Varys!” Gale commanded, his voice a sharp snap. He kept the wolf in place, eyes burning with intensity. “Stay.” Varys growled once more but obeyed, standing still beside Gale, though his eyes never left Kayla. Gale, his jaw clenched, turned back toward her and took another step forward. “I asked you a question,” he repeated, his voice colder now. “Why are you following me?” |
