not specifically cattle brands, but when my family had a much bigger horse business we used to freeze brand. does that count?

I had a 6 year old mare since she was 2.And you couldn't tell she was in heat at all,she was a calm cheeky madam who loved attention.
I do love my geldings, but a ponyo is a ponyo and everyone reacts to heat/hormones differently.
I dont know much about QHs,but from what ive seen they always seem good on weight from just pastures, but you do get odd exceptions.
Good Luck on your search, hope you find the perfect horse! <3

From personal experience (my cousins have been riding for a while and own horses but they were very horrible before they got trainers again) You should search around for a trainer before buying. They can help you decide on what horse is best for you and help you get to know that horse and advance with them.

~A mustang. they are very loyal and bond right up.
~Saddlebreds are awesome, big, gooofballs
~Morgans are very diverse, loyal and kind
~ Thoroughbred. Very athletic

My choice is a mustang because they are so loyal when you gain their trust. they are very smart and still have a spunk)

Rescue a mustang or a different breed. there are so many good horses in bad places, so i would adopt a mustang (My opinion

I’ve never had geldings of my own growing up. I had a POA from 5-16 (both of us) and not once the entire time I had her did I ever notice her in heat. She was a hot spooky turd but I think that’s just the pony side of her 😂 love her to pieces❤️ Then I had a paint mare. When she was younger she would get all squeals around other horses but by the time I had her she just wanted to be friends with everyone. Both horses were VERY easy keepers.

My last mare was a registered paint as well and she was an easy keeper, not a mean bone in her body, could care less about the stud that was a few stalls away from her all the time or any other horse around her. ZERO cares. Good mare but couldn’t connect with her, she also had laminitis and foundered :/ so her feet weren’t as easy keeping. But she was sound.

One of the most important things I think when looking for a horse would definitely be their feet, make sure to bring a hoof pick with you and actually get in there and look. I didn’t do that when looking at the last mare and I really wish I would have because they were TERRIBLE. I just judged on how she moved :/

None of my horses have been expensive, and as you’ve maybe read in another thread in the paddock you might find an absolute gem in a rescue or a kill pen. If you go that route just be sure to have a vets opinion on their health. Not sure where you’re at but if you’re in the so cal area I’d recommend checking out hicaliber horse rescue. I went through them when I had to get rid of my last horse because of deployment and they were super nice and helpful. I follow their page all the time, several broke rideable horses that go through there

I ride English, so I don’t know a ton about Western, but if you really want a mare, just ask the current owner if she ever acts like one, or if they are calm. My mare is really spunky, so at times it isn’t fun, but in the end that is what makes her her. But, on the other hand my gelding is a charm. Just have a certain idea on what you are in for. And age wise, 8-14 would be nice, because you want the horse to be trained, but you also want to spend a lot of time with them before the get too old. I hope this helps :)

You might want to rethink the mare part of it. A mare comes in heat every month, and unless you get an EXCELLENTLY trained one, she'll be a handful when she's in. Just my two cents! Lol, congrats on getting a horse. <3
Also, if you run across a draft cross, those are usually extremely intelligent and more sturdy and easier keepers than a normal QH.

Hmmm Makes me think now LOL Thanks Dim!

For western there’s mostly QH that are used for that you could try TB ??
