I am a SUPER fan of Smartpaks! My older TB has an untreatable injury, and when I called Smartpaks to discuss the best supplement for his issues, they were incredibly kind. I was surprised a few days later with a personalized note, a bag of treats, and a picture frame with my boy’s name engraved on it...all on them. Amazing company <3

In case you are looking for fly sheets, people swear by this sheet at the barn I work at.
http://www.bucas.com/product/sweet-itch-zebra-7/

Full body protection and it'll help a little more compared to most fly sprays. I have yet to find a bug spray that works -.-

Ahhhhh you all have been so helpful!!!! Thank you so much! Especially love the links because there is SO MUCH out there I'm completely lost while browsing these sites haha. I've purchased from State Line Tack and SmartPak in the past and really like them. I'll def. check out Dover's clearance items, my trainer mentioned now is the time to buy a winter blanket so I got on it. I'm headed to the barn a bit later today to measure him as I have no idea what size he'll be.

We trimmed his feet but the farrier advised full shoes for a few months because he has a few cracks that he wants to prevent from getting worse. I haven't had a good look at his feet but going to check them out today. As for his teeth, farrier mentioned (at a glance) they look to be in pretty good shape but the bottom may be a bit long. My trainer has someone out once or twice per year so I'll def. have them looked at.

Deworming will be handled by my trainer, she's going to just keep him on the same schedule as the other horses. He's getting a 5-in-1 (I think that is what it is called) today and she said it is up to me whether I choose to do West Nile or not? I guess she had a terrible experience with it and all of her horses had a horrible reaction to the point where she'd rather not risk using it again. What are your thoughts on that?

I have never experienced any problems with the WNV vaccine or known anyone how has. I personally always vaccinate, as the West Nile Virus is particularly nasty in horses. I would say you should vaccinate for it, especially if your area has a high mosquito population. Thats my 2 cents :)

We always vaccinate everything. The only thing we "slack" on is coggins, we only do that every other year because they never go off farm and the farm almost never have horses coming in. They are out in a pasture full time with a friend of mines horses so I have no concern there of horses they have direct contact with.

It is highly recommended here but I'm also in Oregon, I had both of the boys done but Hannibal is heading to a trainer July/August and then rodeos after and Chief might be teaching kids this summer and then rodeos for the fall so they need it done. I'm also extremely paranoid about my horses getting sick or injured so.

Don't do the strangles vaccine- everyone that I know of that has gotten it, their horses contracted the strangles virus and got extremely sick.
The WNV vaccine has never affected ours...we do it every year.
Check out Academy for a bugspray. It's made using lemon eucalyptus and it really works. I believe it's called REPEL. https://www.target.com/p/repel-lemon-eucalyptus-insect-repellent-spray/-/A-12708369
This stuff works like you can't believe. Plus it's pretty cheap, and that little bottle lasts for a while.
