Sage couldn't help but chuckle at Joras remark, shrugging slightly in response to it. "Sugar is a food group," he mused, a smirk tugging the corners of his lips upwards slightly. "Just ...not the healthiest one out there," he added, voice laced with amusement.

He watched as Jora moved to wipe off lyras face, sort of just settling down in his chair happily as he watched them interact. They really were just the perfect little family.

"A whole mountain," he mused at Joras next comment, leaning back in his chair, just sort of lounging around as he raised his eyebrows upwards. "Hear that Lyra? Momma thinks there's a whole mountain of sweet bread out there somewhere," he added, eyes twinkling with mischeif. Luckily, Lyra picked up on what was jokes and sarcasm ....and wasn't without either of those herself.

She was his daughter, after all. If he gave her anything, it would be that.

"I know," he noted with a chuckle. Though, he hummed softly at her last comment, glancing over at her, face softening slightly. "That's all I want for her," he whispered back.

Jora’s eyes flicked up at Sage as he spoke, and the playful smirk on her face softened into something far more tender. “I know,” she murmured, her voice low enough that Lyra, who was now giggling into her bowl, wouldn’t catch it.

She didn’t have to ask if he meant it. She could see it written in the quiet reverence on his face every time he looked at their daughter—how carefully he held her, how he listened, how he smiled when she did something ridiculous, even when it meant getting fruit in his hair or sweetbread crumbs down his shirt.

Jora reached across the counter, brushing her fingers briefly against the back of his hand. It wasn’t much—just a small, grounding touch—but it was everything. Her way of saying me too. We’ll get her there. Together.

“Mountain or not,” she added aloud, returning to a tone that was light but not without warmth, “you’re on fruit-cutting duty tomorrow morning. If I’m going to be the bad guy, you’re going to help me balance it.”

“This is your fault, anyway,” she said, looking straight at Sage.

And even though her voice was teasing, the glint in her eye as she said it made it very clear:

It was the best kind of blame.

Sage hummed softly when Jora said she knew. She did know, he believed her there. She wanted it too. And they were working on it. They were all getting there. Lyra was happy, but he wanted it for them all, too. And for the most part, they were. He was getting better. Healing. And Jora was happy most of the time now too.

It would just come with time, but he didn't mind that. It was more than worth waiting for.

Of course, he wrinkled his nose when she mentioned having fruit cutting duty next, sort of letting out a groan of complaint. He didn't really mind though...he would do it every day if Jora really didn't want to do it.

He rolled his eyes when she said it was his fault though, shaking his head. "youre the one who insists she has it every morning," he noted with a huff.

It was healthy for her, though, he knew that. He'd give it to her as well. But he did enjoy their light banter, so he wasn't going to just give in that easily.

Jora let out a quiet snort as Sage groaned, a smile tugging at her mouth despite herself. “Well, it is your fault,” she said, a bit more insistently this time, eyes narrowing just slightly in that way that said she wasn’t backing down—even if she didn’t actually expect to win the argument. “You’re the soft one, remember?”

She leaned her elbow on the counter, chin resting in her hand as she watched him with that same lazy amusement that always came out during mornings like this—when there was no rush, no storm looming, just the quiet comfort of home. “You’re the one who sneaks her extra pieces when you think I’m not looking,” she accused, lips twitching into a smirk. “You’re lucky I like watching you two.”

Her hand reached out again, almost without thinking, brushing over his arm in a casual, familiar gesture. “Besides,” she added, softer now, “I know you don’t actually mind. You’d peel every fruit on this island if she asked sweetly enough.”

And he would—because that was just who Sage was. Rough around the edges sometimes, sure, but when it came to Lyra, or her, or the life they’d made, he was the gentlest damn thing she’d ever known

“Just don’t cut yourself doing it. That’s definitely your fault.”

Sage snorted softly in response to her comment, wrinkling his nose at her. "That just means I'm her favorite, right Lyra," he chirped, though the little girl had her mouth full at the time and just grinned at him. He grunted and turned back to Jora, an amused smile twitching at his lips.

Though, he gaped at her in mock shock when she mentioned he'd slipped her extra pieces. "I do not," he complained, though he did, in fact, have an extra piece under the table with lyras name on it. They both knew he did, he just didn't have to admit that.

At her next comment, he huffed out a small, vaguely amused snort. "Are we that entertaining? I think you need a hobby besides stalking me," he teased lightly. She did have her hobbies....and he didn't mind her watching him. They were a family, it was supposed to be that way.

He hummed softly when she mentioned peeling fruit for her, nodding along. He'd do anything for his baby girl....or Jora, or even this new unborn child they didn't even have yet. He loved them all so deeply, and while that had also hurt him deeply in the past, it wasn't now.

He hoped it would stay that way.

"I'd give her the world if I could," he hummed in agreement. Jora knew he'd do anything for their family. "Hell, I'd bring the whole universe down for this little family of ours." It was precious, and he wouldn't give up on it for anything.

Though, he snorted when she mentioned cutting himself. "Babe, I've been mastering weapons much more dangerous than a kitchen knife for years," he noted with amusement. "But good to know I have your concern for if something happened," he added sarcastically. Her comment made it seem like she wouldn't care....but they both knew she would. They were playing. If something actuuhallened, she'd be the first one here with him.

He'd never not appreciate that about her.

Jora raised an eyebrow as Sage threw her under the bus to Lyra, earning an exaggerated gasp from her. “Excuse me?” she said, reaching out to flick his shoulder. “I’m the one who grew her in my body, carried her around for nine months, pushed her out, and still she likes you better because you slip her sweetbread behind my back?” She was clearly teasing—her grin gave her away—but the dramatic delivery was part of the fun. “Unbelievable. Treason, even.”

She leaned back against the counter, arms crossed as she watched him gape, narrowing her eyes playfully. “You do too,” she said smugly, like she’d caught him red-handed. “You and your sneaky sugar stash. You’re not subtle, babe.”

At the mention of her “stalking” him, she let out a low laugh and shook her head. “If I wanted a new hobby, I’d just pick up watching you struggle to peel an orange without making it look like a battlefield,” she teased. “That’s entertainment.”

But her teasing slowly faded into something softer as he went on, that fond glint returning to her eyes as she looked at him. The way he spoke about their family—it always made her chest ache in the best way. All that fierce love he carried, all that quiet protectiveness. He didn’t need to give her the universe. He was hers.

And she’d fight to the ends of the earth to make sure he kept getting the chance to love like this.

“You already have,” she murmured quietly in return, her smile gentling. “You’ve given us everything.”

Still, the softness couldn’t hold forever—especially not with him being cocky again.

“Ohhh, master of weapons, huh?” she echoed with mock awe, flicking a piece of fruit at his forehead. “Don’t act like you weren’t the one who almost cut your thumb off trying to pit that peach last week.”

She turned to grab a cloth to dry her hands, tossing it over her shoulder as she walked past him. “If you bleed all over breakfast, I am making you clean it up.” A smirk tugged at her lips, but the look she gave him over her shoulder? That was nothing but love.

Sage had chuckled softly in response to her comment, nodding along with a grin. "Well she takes after you then," he chirped. "Commiting treason in her past time." Jora had technically committed treason, joining in with the pirates and fighting her own crew to save him the night they'd met again....but no one else knew about that. So she was safe. He could tease her about it though.

"I do not," he whined, though they both knew she was right...he did have a little sugar stash and he did like the sweetbread and other treats Jora made for the family. He'd never had anything like them before ...so now that he'd discovered that sweet tooth, he really couldn't help but covet the sweets he came across.

If she didn't like it she could easily just stop making sweet things so often....but she didn't. She teased him about it a bit, but that was just how they worked. Part of why he loved her so much.

He wrinkled his nose when she continued to tease him about his kitchen skills. He'd gotten better as he'd learned more, but still clearly struggled sometimes. "At least I try and don't make you do all the work," he huffed. She would do it if he needed her to....but he wanted to try. To learn. Be a better husband and father.

His face softened when she mentioned he'd already give them everything, and he reached over to squeeze her hand gently. "You're the only reason I have anything to give," he noted, though his demeanor quickly changed once their banter started up again.

He gave a dramatic gasp when she flicked the fruit at him, popping it in his mouth after he caught it. "My kitchen skills are different than my weapons skills," he grumbled, wrinkling his nose. "Then I'll just give you the bloody portion to eat," he huffed. If he actually got hurt she'd help....but they could tease anyway.

Jora’s eyes lingered on him just a beat longer after that look, her expression softening further despite the smirk still playing at her mouth. She was ridiculous for him, and he knew it. But the thing was—he was just as ridiculous for her.

She turned back toward the sink, grabbing a few plates and setting them out, her movements calm and practiced. It was peaceful, the kind of morning she’d once dreamed of having: sun filtering through the windows, their daughter humming a tune under her breath as she nibbled on fruit, and Sage seated at the table like he belonged there. Because he did belong there. With them. Always.

The sound of Lyra giggling—clearly at something Sage had done—filled the room again, and Jora’s heart did that quiet little flip it always did when she saw them together. “You’re corrupting her, you know,” she said over her shoulder, feigning disapproval. “Teaching her the ways of sneaky sweetbread stashing and fruit bribery.”

Still, her tone held more affection than anything else, and she finally turned back toward them again, leaning her weight against the counter and folding her arms as she looked at Sage. “You’re lucky I love you,” she said with a grin, tilting her head at him. “Otherwise I’d have tossed you out in the night for undermining my fruit-first breakfast agenda.”

But her voice was light, teasing. They both knew she’d never toss him anywhere except back into bed.

And she liked this—liked the simplicity of it. These quiet mornings filled with laughter and love and the occasional (constant) snark. If this was what the rest of their life looked like… then she didn’t need anything else.

Not the universe.

Just this.

The moment Jora had turned her back to begin...whatever she'd decided to do, sage tore the bit of sweet bread he'd hidden on his chair and snuck half to Lyra, keeping the other half for himself.

He couldn't help but chuckle along with her peals of giggles, though wrinkled his nose in response to joras comment. It was mostly on an amused manner, of course...it always was.

She'd never hurt him. He knew that. Their play was simply that....play. it was precious to them.

He hummed as if thinking, nodding along. "Well, she is a pirate after all," he noted with a shrug. "She needs some sort of trademark, doesn't she," he added with a grin. "Lyra Stickyfingers, how does that sound to you," he asked the little girl, sort of poking her side teasingly, the sound of her immediate laughter and agreement warming his heart in a way not much else could.

At Joras next comment though he glanced over at her with a soft hum. She was joking, he knew that, but....he was lucky she loved him. So, so lucky. "I doubt that's what you'd have tossed me out for," he teased back. "I'm sure I'd have done something before now to get the boot," he added with a chuckle.

This was the life he'd promised them. Well...almost. He needed to fix some things in his mind still. Patch himself back together more. Make himself better. He was working on it....for them, he'd do anything.

He hoped they knew that. Lyra was still young, of course, but she would know he loved her. Jora could understand it....he understood him. And he knew she didn't judge him for having bad days or waking up at night from a bad dream. She supported him...and he couldn't be more grateful. He wouldn't have ever come this far without her.

Jora glanced over her shoulder just in time to catch the unmistakable glint of mischief in Sage’s eyes—and the telltale crumbs on his fingers. Her eyes narrowed, slow and sharp, but the grin tugging at her lips betrayed her stern tone. “You absolute traitor,” she said, deadpan. “I leave you unsupervised for two seconds and you're already aiding and abetting in a sugar scandal.”

She pointed at the both of them with the dish towel, Lyra included, who was now laughing so hard she’d almost snorted fruit out her nose. “You’re both lucky you’re cute,” she muttered, shaking her head as she returned to drying off a few things from the sink.

“Pirates, the lot of you.”

Still, her expression softened again as she listened to them—Lyra giggling at the nickname and Sage’s warmth so clearly etched in every word. Jora’s gaze lingered a moment longer than necessary, watching the way he looked at their daughter. It always did something to her, seeing that.

At his next comment, she huffed softly, but the sound was light. “Yeah, well,” she muttered, putting down the towel. “You’re right. I would’ve booted you long before now. Like that time you tracked in half the jungle on your boots and tried to lie about it.”

She walked over to him now, wrapping her arms gently around his middle and pressing a kiss just beneath his jaw. “But I didn’t. And I won’t. Not for sugar thievery, not for muddy floors, and definitely not for nightmares.” Her voice softened at the end, and her eyes met his, steady and sure.

“You’re doing good, Sage,” she murmured. “I see it. Every day. And I know how hard you’re trying—for me, for her, for yourself.” She let her hand settle on his chest, fingers splaying over the steady beat beneath. “We’re not perfect. But we’re good. And we’re only going to keep getting better.”

She leaned in again and kissed him gently, letting it linger. Letting it speak. Because he didn’t always need a thousand words. He just needed to know he was loved. That he was the promise fulfilled—not something broken that had to earn his way back, but someone already worthy. Already enough.

Always enough.
