I seem to have a ton of trouble with this. All my PPP+ horses so far have been bought or given to me by someone. Other than 2. I have 2. One PPP and one PPE that I bred myself and that is it.

Is there some type of trick to getting PPP+ horses?

Good breeding stock is almost impossible to buy, once they are proven producers.
This is why I always recommend to build up own lines with strong produing horses.
This takes time and patience and the will to cull horses that dont meet the requirements.

The best way to get a decent breeding stock is to look for 1yo and 2yo PPP+ mares that are sold for under 2-5k ( depending on breed and color ) from top LB horses.
You can find them quite easy in the sale barns of some top breeders in the game, where you can be sure that the foals will have a high quality pedigree and maybe are only a few points away from an Elite rating.

If I would search new breeding stock, I`d go to the "top breeders" leaderboards and search in the sale barns for those fillys.
Then go and breed them to decent, good producing (LB) studs and either keep the foals if they turn out to be better producers than their dams and cull the dams - or cull the foals and give the dam another try for 2-3 gameyears ;)

You can find top LB studs even for under 1-5k fees if you take a close look - and often PEE combo boys are even better producers and way cheaper than the top 50 boys.

In the meantime you should build up your gelding army and after 4-6 gameyears you should have a nice mare stock and enough funds to afford even higher priced boys and mares, too!

Stay away from own studs in this time - there are so many proven boys in the game, you can choose from.
The own stud is hardly ever the best breeder for all your mares :D

Kuewi has given you pretty much all of the information that you need, but I'll give a few tips of my own too.

Firstly, you can buy mares for 1k on the auction house pretty often, the only issue is that they're often unproven or aren't high producers. When I started out I bought a lot of those mares, and most of them still have lines in my herd today because of that one amazing filly they threw. If you buy them for 1k, you can free range them and make back that money, and they might throw one good foal for you in the 2-3 breedings you give them first.

Secondly, culling is absolutely necessary. If you look in the Guides section of the forums, there's a handy guide there. Also, it's pretty easy to find other people who will do it for you for a price. If you'd like, I'd be happy to do it for free just because I love culling. Culling dramatically improves the quality of your stock, I can't stress this enough. When I started I was getting PPPs and PEPs only, but within three months of starting to cull I was getting PEEs.

Thirdly, good stallions are super important. If you want PPP+ mares, you need good stallions or it doesn't matter how good the dams are. The leaderboard sires are the only ones I use, other than my own stallions for testing. Like Kuewi said, you can get breedings to LB sires for pretty cheap if you're patient at finding them.

Finally, matching matters more than any of these, and it's the hardest. You can't control the random factor, but you can control what you give it to work with. If you go to that culling guide I mentioned earlier, there's a link to Hyrim's culling guide and on that site there's also a page about breeding. Everyone basically matches by ensuring the horses aren't weak in the same areas, but where it differs is in whether the strengths are matched with weaknesses or strengths with strengths and just ensuring the weaknesses don't align. It sounds like that might be the issue you have at the moment, if you'd like a few examples you could message me pages for a few mares you're not sure about and I'll send you ideas for possible matches.

I hope this helps a bit, and that you get the PPP+ mares you're hoping for!

Thank you for the answers! I am not entirely sure what culling is, but from what I am getting its FRing any foal or horse I have that is under a PPP rating? Am I right?

I have kept a couple of my horses under a PPP rating because they were doing good on earning me a little bit of money. If they are stallions I geld them. I do this whether or not I keep them though. I have been FRing or selling the foals that come out to be a lower rating though. Some of them were colors. My first couple of weeks I did breed my lower rated horses, but I was just excited! I haven't done that since. I only breed PPP+ with other PPP+ horses.

I am assuming what you mean by matching is if I had a PEE mare and bred it to an EPP stallion? I try to keep it like that every time I go to breed them. I match the E with a P or vice versa. I hope this is all correct!

Most of the top stables aren't breeding their PPP+ mares anymore. They FR on sight, check the LB's find sires you like and check Adams Auctions.
Also, don't be spammy, but it's ok to ask for a brood or ask to buy a horse once you find a bloodline you like. Don't be offended if the answer is "no" just move on.

Culling is pruning your herd by keeping only mares that can consistently produce their rating.

Seems like you have lots of good pointers here, but I just have one thing to add. For buying PPP mares and such, go to the eventing LB's as opposed to the top breeders boards. Those boards tend to be a hot mess. :)

And as for your matching question, refer to this page. There is a lot of other great guides on that site too. :)

If I were you, I'd go to Hyrim's site above and follow the matching and culling rules she outlines. Condensed, it pretty much means you'll cull mares that don't produce at least 2 foals PPP or better, depending on your goals, in her first three breedings to a stud that matches her. For breeding, the ratings don't matter as much as each skill. I've bred an EEE from an EEExEPS match, what matters is how the skills match up. Hyrim's guide basically says match strengths and disperse weaknesses. I'd still recommend reading it, because she makes a lot of good points and goes into more detail, but knowing these two points is plenty to start with.
