Sting,
Could be! Blue jays are related to corvids though, so not usually as skittish, and wicked smart!

It's so incredibly hard to find a good farrier which sucks because good feet on a horse is everything.

I have had the same farrier for two years now, and at first he was great. My horse's feet look great, and all was fine.

Lately however my farriers quality has gone down. He has trimmed my OTTBs back feet so incredibly short that my vet was concerned, and he destroyed the feet of another horse for my trainers client. I have been looking for another farrier, but in my area there is a small pool and most of them don't show up for their appointments.

People just don't want to put in the work anymore, and it's frustrating.

Yikes... I started doing my own farrier work 12+ years ago for that very reason. I read lots of books, some being the ones you would read if you got the certificate. I don't trim other horses since I'm not a professional, but I'm the go-to on trail rides when someone gets a crack or needs a touch-up. My horse chiropractor is also an equine vet and she compliments my horse's hooves every time and asks for my farrier's info and then I remind her it's me =P I think she has the same problem you are having.

I couldn't tell you why farriers start to decline other than their age and physical health. It would make sense. I am incredibly sore after doing my two horses and the second horse usually has a slightly worse trim because I wear out in 90 degree temps.

I'm not sure where you can look for a different trimmer. I used to have a certified barefoot trimmer come from another state and split the travel fee with other horse people in the area.

Maybe check out "the horses hoof" site for trimmers in your area. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post directl links on here.
