Dulcie, I do believe silver only affects the color for black based coats, but I could be wrong.

Dulcie, yes you are right chestnut bases hide silver. I think I recall something about double creme hiding it as well, but I'm very unsure if that's right or not

Capital letters mean the gene is present
There are 2 colors that need an absence of the gene
Red (ee) means no black is present
Pearl (pp) think of pearl as toner

Silver (Zz/ZZ) only shows on black base coats (Ee/EE) correct?

Zz or ZZ means the horse has silver. zz means the horse doesn't have silver. Hope that makes a little more sense.
Golden Rose

Zz means the horse is carrying one copy of silver. One copy means the horse has a chance of passing silver onto their offspring. If the horse is ZZ, then it carries two copies and every foal they throw is guaranteed to be silver

Fanta, it means that the horse is silver or if it isn't showing, its hiding silver.

Hi all. InkSpren here. I've noticed that some grey foals actually have grey on their foal images, while others don't. So I got curious. Is there a correlation between the amount of grey on the foal image and the type of grey the horse has as an adult? I used the lense of time on a large number of grey foals, and the answer is yes. Here are the results, with images for illustration. I tried to make the examples uniform (same breed and base color) to keep things simple. All images are cropped from HEE and not altered in any other way. If you have anything to add, let me know!

Edit: I somehow completely forgot about bloody shoulder. I will update this in a few days once I have some more data points.

Lets start at the beginning. A grey foal's foal image can come with four different levels of grey. All of the following foals were listed as grey, and they all have black bases without dun or roan. I gene tested the last foal to be sure.
1. No Grey
2. Moderate Grey #1 (Smooth)
3. Moderate Grey #2 (Chunky)
4. Heavy Grey

No grey on foal
When I used the lense on grey foals whose foal images did not show any grey, the adult images came out as either dark dapple, fleabitten, or what I call roany-grey with lots of base showing through (and no, these horses did not actually have roan.) There are two versions of dark dapple and two versions of roany-grey. Here are some foals and their adult images; foals on top and adult underneath.

Moderate Grey #2 (Chunky)
All foals with chunky moderate grey grew up to be very lightly dappled with some of the base color showing through on the legs.

Heavy Grey
All foals with heavy grey completely greyed out. In other words, they turned "white."

Now, you might have noticed that both "no grey" and "moderate grey smooth" foals can become fleabitten. But do they become the same fleabitten? No. Here they are side by side for comparison. Both foals had the same base color. You can go back and review the foal images in their respective categories in previous posts.
