So I’ve owned horses in the past but I’ve been out of it for a looooooong time. I wanted to get everyone’s input/suggestions on supplies, brands you like, places you buy, etc? My trainer has a saddle for me, I have a pad. Obvs. I gotta get a bridle, which she’s going to help me with. I need to get a grooming box/supplies, boots (front/back/bell), flymask, fly sheet and a heavy duty winter blanket - since they should be on sale now. Crop, mmmm... I know I’m missing things. He has a halter and lead. Gotta get him a 5-in-1 vaccine and dewormer. He had his feet trimmed and is getting shoes today... and should be having his teeth looked at soon.

Also wondering what you guys would suggest as a reasonable fly spray and bath soap?

Any input is appreciated! I’m not rich by any means so looking for reasonable places. I do have supply shops nearby but thought I’d reach out here first and see if anyone has some cheap(er) online retailer suggestions. :)

It's been a long time since I've bought anything. I usually got my stuff off ebay. Various tack and blanket pieces etc. Some things were new some were used. Basic stuff i just went to tractor supply. When I was younger we used Stateline Tack or Dover a lot. My friend from school who teaches lessons uses SmartPak a lot and LOVES their customer service, but I don't know how they compare on prices or how extensive their selection is. I like them for their dog section. :P

This is the blanket I have for my two ponies. In CA I doubt you need as heavy of a blanket as I do in NY. But you should still get a 1200D (this is how dense the weave/how heavy the outer shell is) because it will hold up better. I really like these blankets because they have held up really well and don't hurt the wallet too bad.

Maybe this one would work for you at 200g fill, it will be lighter than the one above

Either way when you get a winter blanket make sure it has a nylon lining, it slips around better on the horse's fur. I've had blankets without nylon lining and they were awful, even putting them on were harder.

You'll also want tail flap, leg straps. In NY I like our blankets to have the higher neck because it is that much more protection against snow sitting on them.

Soap I've always used Ivory dish soap. I've used it for years and years. Works great and leaves the ponies silky.

Fly spray, don't skimp on it! Get a GOOD brand. We always use Bronco. It isn't overly expensive, but it works great.

Consider SWAT too. Even with fly masks with ears I always put it in Cody's ears because he attracts flies like no one's business. Plus his sheath (it is clean so it isn't the smell), way, way back up between his legs always gets chewed up right when the flies come out. So I put SWAT and fly spray on him there too.

https://www.statelinetack.com/item/cashel-crusader-fly-mask-with-ears/SLT180443/

This is the fly mask we have had for both ponies, works great.

https://www.statelinetack.com/item/farnam-supermask-ii-classic-without-ears/SLT180342/

Or the classic Super Mask II. We always get the ones with the ears because Cody is a magnet for nasty green head flies in his ears.

Horse.com has a good schedule to follow for deworming. You don't want to give the wrong thing at the wrong time otherwise you are just throwing your money away. If you deworm and the horse is still showing wormy signs do another dose. Every so often our horses will rub their tails (pin worm) so we give them a second dose.

In the 11 years I've had Cody I've had his teeth checked every year and this year is the first time I've ever had to have them done. So my recommendation is to get them at least *checked* every year. You never know he might eat funny and wear his teeth funny. Or he may not need them done again for another decade. But if you already have a vet/or someone who does them already there for other horses, it doesn't hurt to just have him looked at!

As for shoes, talk to your farrier. He may not need them! In my opinion if he doesn't need them, don't waste your money. I'd rather pay our farrier bill of 35 for a trim instead of 80/120 for shoes. Maybe he would only need shoes on the front, that would lesson your bill.

Mane and Tail is the best for shampoo and conditioner, humans use it too LOL, Show Sheen is great for detangling and making your pony shiny 😘

Some things to add to the list: rain sheet, hoof oil/conditioner, Sore No More or any other lineament and now-bows with standing wraps if you are going to be doing strenuous activities (jumping, speed events, really long rides) basic pony first aid materials: bandages, cotton, iodine solution, syringe, Banamine (for colic) and Bute (for pain/inflamation) ***acquired from vet, only use if you are well informed on the drugs and how to use them***

I get most of my products from Greenhawk.

Do not go to Rural King unless you want tack. They have a terrible selection for horse items. (in my opinion)

www.smartpak.com (free shipping, hello! LOL)

www.doversaddlery.com (return anything) also I window shop their clearance a ton. Lots of winter stuff last time I checked.

I second Jeri on the Ivory - we use it on the babies especially when those bootys get dirty haha, super gentle. Most human shampoos work on horses just fine. Ie. Suave, mane and tail. And don't have the "it's for horses" price tag
