Yeah hay pastures are definitely worth it. Especially if you have a large number of horses

Ok that's what I was thinking. I wouldn't mind a hay pasture or two but I won't save for the crops :)

The only thing you can do with crop fields is you can grow grain to use instead of hay, you can do a senior blend to lessen the chance of older horses dying, and you can do a dapple blend which is just for looks. Really more work and money than it is worth

I want to do a regular one because I would be okay with a colt for this match but only if it is a WWW lol so I would be screwed if it was less than WWW and a colt, but a filly can be EWE+

I love using Alfalfa Cubes. I use Spillers high Fibre and it works well with senior horses or ponies that can't manage Long fibre. I used it for a OTTB Project and added in some NAF Molasses which got him in health and for older horses or ponies we use Spillers Senior + Supple Balancer which Gives Every day nutritions &i helps with joint Movement for comfort. They are affordable, would recommend all three xx

We often use Rice Bran for my mare. She's older and we have a really hard time keeping weight on her and that plus some alfalfa cubes are about the only way we can keep her at a healthy weight.

We use rice bran and vegetable oil (2 cups a day)
Our friends use alfalfa cubes, and their horses gained so much weight they basically had to stop feeding them. And these are the high-maintenance, hot headed barrel horses. Her horses really liked the alfalfa, so she got it in the big blocks, sort of like a round bale. If you put a hay net on it, they hardly waste any at all!

Just be aware some horses are sensitive to alfalfa, but if your horse is not try it! There are also alfalfa pellets, the Standlee brand is great.

Edited to add about the beet pulp part. Both are useful in old horses but I prefer my horses to eat as much grass/hay as possible as the majority of their food so I'd personally start with the alfalfa and see how that goes, and replace it with or add beet pulp as necessary.

If he has good teeth, the most bang for your buck is alfalfa hay vs cubes. $6-8 for a 60lb or more bale of alfalfa for me. Or $11+/50lb bag of alfalfa cubes/pellets. I've done a lot of getting horses in bad shape, especially older ones, into weight and shape for resale. If they can tolerate alfalfa (only had one horse so far that just could NOT do alfalfa in any form, and most grain has alfalfa meal) it's calorie dense. I'd also do equine senior (because the taste is super appealing to horses), get it soaked, and mix in two cups of oil morning and night. Each cup of oil has 2k calories. So up to four cups a day is 8k calories. Plus your alfalfa, and they'll put it on quick.

I just like beet pulp in the winter for more water intake. I throw some salt in their too to encourage more intake.

I've been feeding this company for 2 yrs, I'm friends with someone who works in their research devision and no one has had anything but good things to say about BB Feeds. Every single bag is the same every time, they never change any of their ingredients. It's also made in an ionohore free facility.

Aw man - wish this was available near me. I'm only so-so on the seaweed but the rest of the ingredient list intrigues me, I would have totally tried my horse on this!
