Thanks guys! I think I am going to try putting out a low-calorie food 24/7 and supplement my underweight cat with a urinary health specific wet food, then if it doesn't help the other's weight I will just do small meals for him and wet mixed with dry for my other
I additionally have the option of putting my underweight cat on a raw food diet as a supplemental feeding instead of wet food. I feed my dog a raw diet. I would have to research what cats need for it though lol
some people do a mix of both! either as separate meals or mixing some wet with the dry
you could even try offering small meals of wet food at regular times, and provide a smaller amount of dry as something available 24/7. that way it would be there for snacking but not a massive amount to gorge on
Phoenix I didn't know that thank you! I may try mixing wet and dry food for him? I keep reading that it's better to do that than just straight wet food
if the one is prone to uti's then wet food can actually help with that, too, since it provides more hydration than the dry food. so that might be something to try anyway
Min We live in a one bedroom very small apartment so the splitting up isn't really an option, but if it only for short meals like I was talking about I could do that, but not for long periods of time. And yes he loves treats so I may be able to try the different foods then add treats if he starts losing weight or something. I think I will talk to my vet like you said and research some foods for UTI prone and hard keeping cats.
Hmm would be tricky then by the sounds of it. Definitely give the different foods a try- does your other cat like treats and stuff as well? You could try mixing some in to food to make it more appealing. Or alternatively is there any way of splitting them into different parts of the house when food's around?
The only thing I am thinking is maybe feed the overweight one a low-calorie food in two small meals during the day then maybe try feeding my other cat a higher calorie wet food in multiple meals during the day? The only issue with that is my cat prone to being under weight is very picky about his food (wet food may solve this?) but he is also prone to UTIs so I have to be careful with ingredients in the food
I have an issue.. One of my cats is starting to get overweight, but if I don't leave food out 24/7 my other cat won't eat and he gets underweight very easily. I don't have hundreds of dollars to spend on one of those feeders that only opens for a chip or sensor thing.. Any ideas?
