My first horse was a 16.7hh Thoroughbred Stallion from Frankel. He was FAST. He died of a tumor in his brain though.

He loved to gallop wildly around his pen

Tema was my QH mare whose pic graces The Farm`s Stable page. Zero temperment - just a love.

My first horse was a funny 16hh Friesan gelding. He was a nice old guy. He died when he was 35yo....😣😣

oh cool, thanks for that, I didn't know that about their muscles being the reason why.

Coruscant, that's correct.

The way it was explained to me, Quarter Horses have fast twitch muscles, which are powerful but tire quickly. Thoroughbreds don't, so they aren't as fast over short distances but they can hold their speed for a couple miles.

But I do live in a smaller town and we travel around to different tracks. So I've seen a lot. I once saw a Friesian in a race. It flabbergasted me. They aren't that fast, but they placed 7th or 8th I'm pretty sure. Again though, small town racing!

I've had two Quarter Horses and both were super lazy haha, not sure they were beating anything x) loved those mares tho.

My first horse was a Arab/Saddlebred cross who was all of 14.3 hh, and he would be lengths ahead of my frien`ds 17hh Walker mare every time we raced.
Of course he might have been running away from that super scary LEAF back there...

Not always. I've seen some pretty fast Quarter Horses do long distance and leave Thoroughbreds in their dust.

Aura, yep! And that's actually where their name comes from. So many Quarter Horses are faster than other breeds at distances of a Quarter Mile or less.

Isn't it like QHs are faster over shorter distances, like if a QH raced a TB it'd win at a short distance, but TBs are faster at longer distances?

I kinda always thought Paint Horses were the fastest..

So true! I lived in rural Nevada, where cattle ranching was a major part of the local economy. Some of the cowboys took retired sprinters and retrained them for ranch work because they were great at chasing down cattle, too.

Quarter horses hold the fastest speed ever recorded

Tema

For real. I've raced Quarter Horses on some of my top Thoroughbreds and still got placed behind them. They have a little kick to them.

That`s where the get their name - nothing beats them inside that 1/4 mile.

Yea I know! Sometimes they're underrated in racing and it just flabbergasts me. Most people think that Thoroughbreds are the best racing horses, they're just the most common.
