Wander I wish I took lessons that incorporated that stuff. At most I learned how to tack and hose them off if needed. I didn't really learn anything else until I started volunteering at the barn I work at now.
Beepers, our lesson students help feed the herd and learn care tasks too, not just riding. It's always good to teach them what's involved in caring for a horse, as a lot of them, especially that age, just don't realise how different it can be from a dog or a cat. We have one gal who prefers it and the horsemanship part of her lesson is her favourite over the riding portion.
I could never work in a place like that. At least at my job I'm not in charge of the kids. That's for the instructors and non horse volunteers. I just work with the horses lol
Ah yes. The toddler feral phase haha. I have been in a classroom with 18 1-2 year olds before. And all of them had special needs or were there for behavior I prayed a lot that day.
That's so understandable Trigger. My niece was a horrible toddler to be around. She liked to scream for fun in the car (which was not fun for me due to sensory issues).
She also never listened, and I hated when my mom had to bring her to my riding lessons. She also messed up a video my mom took of me doing a full jumping course that I was super proud of.
I went on vacation for 2 weeks and when I got back to the stables I found out that one of the sweetest horses that I always pet when I walked past him had died. I never even got to say goodbye.
I was at a show the other day and I was letting my horse drag her lead rope while she grazed. I let my toddler run around in the grass. Ans like a magnet she went right up to my horse. I would bring her back to the trailer with her toys and she would run right back. My horse is good but like damn, she did not need to go high speed barefoot up to my horse 😅
Trigger yes they are super special. Worth their weight in gold. Obviously they aren't perfect and some have quirks or bad habits but are still pretty safe regardless.
But at my barn we have horses who are young or frisky or do not know much. So for that, we ask people to control their kids or remove them if they cannot. Cuz letÂ’s be real, toddlers are terrorists
Yeah with kids with special needs it is a different story. Those horses are literal angels, and typically older been there done that horses. I have always enjoyed my time at therapy barns.
Beepers, I'd start making her start with chores. Riding is earned, not freely given. If she can't listen on the ground, it's unsafe to put her on a horse
It's quite different at my barn. All the kids are special needs/disabled so it's not uncommon to have kids unexpectedly run around. Obviously we don't want it to happen but it does. We do have safety precautions though. Someone is always near the horses so they don't have a chance to go behind them and spook them or something.
