It was. It was him using coffee as an example for people with debt saying they don't make enough to pay it off and yet drink coffee everyday. He used it as a look at where your money's going. $6 every day for a month adds up. Why don't you cut it down to every other day or once a week until you pay off the debt. Something like that

Moderation is key.

I'd never encourage high school kids to go out and spend all of their money on frivolous things all the time, but if you have a job, can pay any bills you need to, and save a little bit... spend a little on yourself, too. Even as adults, we have to treat ourselves. It's ridiculous to work our lives away and not be happy.

My habit of choice is buying books LOL (I don't like coffee!)

Backwood Barns, that's great advice! I live in a community that reveres coffee. We have an abundance of small, locally owned coffee shops that serve coffee that was roasted within the community, as well. Their beverages are expensive, even when compared to Starbucks, but worth it when I can afford to indulge. Plus, I'm supporting the local economy. But the key thing is "when I can afford to indulge" which isn't every day, or even every week.

For me, I treat that coffee the same way I treat a new book or a new sweater or anything else that brings me genuine joy; I set aside money specifically for those things after I take care of my rent and bills. Then I'll give myself that pleasure. I might even wear my new sweater to the coffee shop, where I'll read my new book while sipping my delicious coffee. It makes these rainy days feel so wonderfully cozy!

On the flip side, I might go many months without that indulgence, when I know I can't afford it.

pretty sure the coffee was just a small point about how small things add up over time. We watched a lot of Ramsay

I save 70% of my earnings from my job every week and if I keep going I can easily afford a $10,000 car in a year, so I'm not doing pretty bad by my standards lol

Yea, understandable. I'm a new Freshman and last year (8th) we had 2 financial classes. (I'm not complaining, they were fun!) And now as a Freshman with a job, I already have a card and a job and I bedget! I'm also in PINNACLE! (Early College HighSschool Program)

Exactly! It's not meant to be torture. You can still have fun and budget. Dave ramsey told this one story about a couple who was starting his course and before starting anything they went out and bought a shitton of fun stuff and junk food because they thought they'd never get to again. they discovered they were very wrong lol

I teach a personal finance class to juniors and seniors who need their last math credit and don't want to take upper level trig/calc/algebra 2.
It's not about not buying coffee or spending money on things you like, it's about budgetting and managing money correctly. If you can afford it and it's something that makes you happy... buy all the coffee you want. As long as you can afford it after all your other bills!

Like I don't follow him to a T because you do in fact need a credit score to rent an apartment even if you do have the money but I don't finance anything unless I have the money set aside specifically for that. Like I did take out a loan for school but I plan to have it paid back before I get my degree and it starts colleting interest
