Natural eggs are best bought in bulk from fresh farms. (So you don't have to go get them as often) They can keep for a really long time, even on the counter.
We had a huge egg producer in the neighborhood in NC. His company would not take double yokes, so he always had TONS that he just gave to neighbors. He gave them away in 36-count egg flats. We could stack up 2 or 3 of those flats on the counter and keep them, for weeks, they were fine. Cause they never went thru the chem washes or went into the fridge before he gave them away.
I'll eat expired canned food for a couple years past the date so long as it's not rusted and produce as long as it's visually still good but I don't like to mess around with things like milk
Our local store keeps expired food on the shelves. One of my friends brought home food that expired in april and milk that went bad three weeks before 😂😂
Honestly the biggest thing that gets me is paying nearly $5 for a dozen eggs. I spent years eating eggs that my chickens laid so I wasn't familiar with egg prices. I love to eat eggs and I love to bake but it's just SO expensive. And I could go on a long, exhausting hunt for eggs from the Amish but I prefer either store eggs or eggs from my own hens that I know are good
Our best 2 farmer markets are about 35 miles in either direction. But still worth it to not buy the big names and get fresher foods. Again, we just plan to do lots of errands all on the same day to make the drive more worth it.
In NC we were planning our shopping trips more carefully in order to go to the next town over that had better store choices.
The added plus was that we no longer had to worry about being mugged in the walmart parking lot in the closer town, or step over the passed out druggies. That town was only around 6000-7000 population. We used to do all our shopping for household, farm, everything there.
When that hell began seeping towards all the other towns, it was time to go. Local officials did nothing to put order back into the towns.
Right Vecc. The small stores here have actual private labels, not just big corp products in the store brand name, pretending to be something else.
Gotta read the labels, and again, be willing to look elsewhere, even inside the big stores.
Even walmart has some smaller labels that are not just big corp under a different label. Just have to be willing to look for them, and maybe do without what is the normal grab and buy items.
