the *being boss* will get you nowhere with a smart horse, and could get you hurt. Dont even try to boss a mule, haha.

It is the responsibility of the rider to communicate through aids and body in a way the horse can understand and then act in a desirable way.
It does not matter if you are asking for piaffe in upper level dressage, or for a sliding stop in reining, or for your horse to cross a creek on a trail ride.
It all works the same in the horses mind. They have no idea what a ribbon or belt buckle is. They are just trying to get along with their human and maybe get that carrot at the end of the day haha

Natural Horsemanship is good until it is not, it can get you in a lot of trouble down the road depending on who you are learning from.
My old natural horsemanship trainer about got me killed.

some of the barns I been people are so stuck up they think that English is for fancy people and western is for careless people🤦

Any horse can be ruined
It's up to us who want good horsemanship to fix their issues
I, as a trainer, focus on good stable and ground manners from an early age especially since I work with show jumping horses
No point in having a brilliant jumper whose a little shit to try do anything else with
That's just my opinion though 🤷🏼‍♀️

Let's just say I had never heard of natural horsemanship until I switched disciplines. Of course it is possible to do shows or ride english and still bond with your horse. Around here though, there isn't training for that unless you ride Western. 🤷🏼‍♀️

As always, there are good and bad in all areas.
Some people put way too much emphasis on results instead of good horsemanship and improving yourself and your horse to be able to do more and better things.
The awards, IF you compete, should just be icing on the cake.
Competition should be viewed as a way to have fun and test if your methods and hard work are getting you somewhere positive, and increasing yours and your horses skills

not all people are like that, to be honest I wouldn't listen to the people who this being the boss of the horse is the only way to win

Buckeye is right. I have seen English and western horses ruined because all the riders care about is ribbons and buckles.
My barn does Western Pleasure and some ranch classes, but we are primarily English based. We focus on horsemanship as well being able to correct behaviors.

The amount of times I've fallen off for stupid things 😂
Like the time I fell off Flynn because I was too busy looking at a bird and he spooked at a really really scary bush that isn't actually that scary anymore

I got tired of the mentality so I switched disciplines. Now I don't ride though, but if I ever got back into it it would be western again.

@Rain, unfortunately I went to 3 different barns in my area to take english lessons and at each one the focus was showing and being the boss of your horse.

Hello chat!! I'm not sure if this would be better suited for the forums or not.
How long did it take you guys to figure out what you wanted to do with your account?
I'm not very active here, and I pop in every now and then to keep my account going, but I was planning to try and get more into this lol

to be fair, if you want to succeed in showing AND be a good horseman, it should always be about proper training, proper riding and ASKING the horse in a way they understand and give you want you are looking for in the ride/performance.

And a horse needs direction from its rider. Gosh knows I have had to fix way too many spoiled horses who had people not *telling them what to do* for lack of a better phrase.

The round pen ruined horses are the worst. gah

I actually haven't fallen off very much. The few times I have weren't easy falls though. I bruised my ribs once.
