i bet that was a real jump scare lol. i had a terrifying moment a few years ago when i lived in a condo in the city. i was on my patio and i saw a shape moving through the bushes, thought it was my neighbor's dog loose again so i was called to it, then it whipped it's head around and stared right at me before doing the eerie fast-trot away.
That relies on actually seeing them lol. The only time I've seen a coyote was probably 25 years ago at fuck'o'clock at night when it trotted under the nightlight
yeah the coyotes here have gotten less scared of people, too. i make sure to throw rocks/yell at any i see during the day that aren't keeping their distance. the lack of education about not keeping wild animals wild is making the human-animal conflicts worse and more frequent. an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, but as a whole we've really failed at the prevention part lol.
They're prickly pears, so you just brush up against them and you're covered in fine spines. They're not fun to land on. I can attest to this. It's a pretty decent deterrent.
Honestly, once things cool down a bit, it's mostly a matter of going out in the pasture and digging up the cactus to throw into any fence slide unders. Have fun with that lmfao
Some animals, wild or not, have no fear. Of anything. We have never had an issue with coyotes until like 2021, when it was almost like they moved in overnight.
And honestly, to put fear in them, you have to have interaction with them. That's not exactly an easy thing when they come up to the house when everyone's already in bed
I started carrying a firearm on trails because of crazy meth heads in the national forest where we used to ride, and then kept carrying once I realized it might be crucial in other emergent situations. Such as an animal attack, or god forbid having to do the humane thing for a grievously injured horse.
Yeah my friend said she didnt think one would ever attack and that she felt more comfortable just leaving them alone. I told her she needs to get comfortable at least scaring them away, or stop going out solo.
yeah, feral dog packs are still a problem outside of most cities. they're much worse than coyotes because they're domesticated animals and have very little fear of humans. it's easier to keep wild animals scared of us than it is to keep feral ones scared.
